After four days at Jasper the party
broke up. The Rivierres were going to
Quesnel the direct way, but Ruth and I
refused their invitation to go with them.
We wanted more adventure . . . yet.

The adventure was dished out to us in
the Tonquin Valley . . . dished out in full
measure and overflowing, with Fate wear-
ing a grim and quizzical smile as it
watched us escape disaster once only by
the thickness of a small pine tree and at
other times by an equally small margin.

We went to Tonquin by way of Portal
Creek and Maccarib Pass, and when we
came to the ranger’s cabin at Maccarib
Creek, found the cabin empty, although
there were signs of a very recent visit.
The cabin was wound round and round
with barbed wire, and when we did, that
evening, make the acquaintance of the
ranger, John Curren, he told us the wire
was to repel grizzly bears.

His predecessor at this station had been
killed by a bear. He had gone for his

horses in the morning, and, climbing the
hill behind the cabin, had unwittingly
walked between an old female grizzly
bear and her cubs. The mother had at.
tacked in rage and almost before the man
was aware of what was happening had
killed him and literally torn him to bits,
Boards that I had noticed missing from
the ranger’s porch had gone to make the
man’s coffin. The bear was still roaming |
the hills, and was distinguished by her
size. She had been seen only a few day's
before. We didn’t see her. |

It was our plan to go into British Co-
lumbia by way of Tonquin Pass, drop
down the creek of the same name to its
junction with the there infant Fraser
River and follow this out westward to
where we could cross the Cariboo Moun-
tains to Quesnel.
