to the Indians, but while it looks sort of
dictating to headquarters it was the kind of
information that the superintendent wanted
us to send him, because we were right on
the spot and were best able to say what
ought to be done. Anyway, they acted on
my directions to the letter, with the result
that they dropped on Louis according to
schedule. Fitzgerald got him between Bridge
Creek and the old 100-Mile and Pigeon and
Mason’s trail. My wire read: “Have got
Ernest Louis across Fraser River. Send
Yolland down to Alkali Creek and the
Meadows. Let it be well-known to the
Indians there. Send McMillan by way of
Deep Creek and Yellowjack Creek. Send a
good man in by way of 100-Mile by Pigeon
and Mason’s trail not later than Thursday.
Do not approach where the Chilcotin enters
the Fraser before Thursday night”. The
plan of campaign which was meant in this
message was intended to drive Louis in a
certain direction. By sending two constables
in two different directions, with instructions
to let him make himself well-known among
the Indians and what his mission was, we
knew that Louis would get word through
his friends and would know that these
directions were closed to him, and he would
be given the idea that that was the general
direction in which he was being looked for.
Then he would head in a direction where
there was no word of police being seen and
would drop into the hands of the men sent

Indians or breeds it pays to let your sup-
posed plans be known to his friends, for
you can be certain that he will hear of it
and thus you throw him off the scent and
get him from a direction that he is not
watching 14,

A group of Yorkshiremen wanted
William Smith and myself to lead them on
a hunt for gold up the country, to go in by
Horsefly and Keithley, but we didn’t take
them up on it. I have been able to hunt for
other things but I have never gone after
gold, and I was not keen on trying to lead
anyone where it might be found. Smith was
manager of Wing Brothers, shoe merchants
in Victoria.

One time it was reported to me that there
was a crazy Indian on a rancherie who was
threatening to kill any other Indian who
approached. James Deacon and I went
down and found a tremendous big and
powerful buck spreading terror among his
neighbours. He was six feet four inches
tall, and to his natural strength was added
the strength and cunning of insanity. He
was standing at his door and taking shots
at any Indian who appeared in sight. We
rushed him and had an awful struggle. He
nearly got the better of us a few times but
we hung on. I broke my baton over his
head without it making much appreciable

‘Even to this day the Cariboo country offers real
difficulty in the pursuit of Indian law breakers.
Most noted example of this was the case of
Moses Paul and Paul Spintlum, wanted for the
murder of Provincial Const. Kindness. The
chase occupied the best part of two years and
cost the Government nearly $100,000 — the
story was featured in THE SHOULDER STRAP,
February 1942.
