After a wait of six years, during which time Clark had been under continuous observation, though he had not known of it, the Police’s suspicions of him were justified, and their last report to Headquarters stated: “CASE CONCLUDED.” VETERAN POLICE N.C.O. RETIRES TERMINATING THIRTY-NINE years of public service as a police officer, Staff- Sergeant W. H. (Bill) Handley of the B. C. Police headquarters Motor Licence Branch retired on pension April Ist. Born in 1868 in Liverpool, England, Mr. Handley has spent most of his life in Can- ada’s “Golden West.” He commenced his career as a police officer with the Victoria City Police in March, 1900, under Chief Constable John M. Langley. With the Vic- toria force he served as Constable, Gaolcr, Licence Inspector, Sergeant and Detective. In 1912 he resigned to become Chief of Police of Victoria’s nearby suburb of Oak Bay. He left the Oak Bay Police in 1914 to enter civil life. However, he was back in harness in 1918 when he joined the Motor Licence Branch of the B. C. Police at Vic- toria. He served for over twenty years with the Branch, rising from Constable to Staft- Sergeant. Mr. and Mrs. Handley have made a host of friends during their long residence in the Island city, and they will join with us in extending every good wish for the future. MARSHALL-WELLS (B.C.)
