Over The Edge UNBC Medieval Club Brings Glory Home Again Nov 1, 1999 by Nicole Tonn The weekend of October 23 saw the UNBC Medieval Culture and Combat Club travel to Kamloops for Freeze Off 1999. We crammed seven people into a Volkswagon Van, five twenty pound bags of armour into our trusty pick-up, and headed off for a week- end in the tournament capital of BC. There were approxi- mately 120 people at the event, 28 of them fought in the funny weapon _ tournament. The tourney was dou- ble elimination, mean- ing each fighter could compete until they had lost twice. After being knocked out the fighters could take lessons from the many knights at the event. Caliban placed 3rd overall and another fighter made it to the fifth round. Of course all the Wolf Pack Warriors fought valiantly and with honour. Once the tourney was over, we all sat down to an amazing feast. The meal consisted of four removes. There was bread and _ cheese, pasta, soup, ham, roast beef, chicken, potatoes, assorted vegetables, and of course, dessert (everything chocolate under the sun). Our hosts worked hard to put together an amaz- ing event. During the feast, in between the removes, there was a_ bardic competition. The com- petitors could perform any form of period entertainment. There were dancers, story- tellers, a jester, and several singers. One of our members entered this contest, and placed first out of 15 con- tenders. She received a glass, and a token (edi- tor's note, the author is being humble it was Nicole). After all the feasting and toasting had been editor’s note | would have made this pic- ture bigger but it was submitted on disk and it was tiny. For those of you who are not aware of what this entails, it has a lot do with consuming various substances, and of course, is always done in a safe manner. We dragged our butts out of bed early the next day (hung over and not at all comfy feeling), crawled into the VW van, and set out on the long journey home.
