When dinner was over, Dave Protheroe
and the two constables went back into the
front room and sat around the Carron
stove, smoking. Slim remained behind in
the kitchen with Jean Protheroe.

“Trappin’s not so good up here as it used
to be,” commented Dave. “Too many fly-
by-night traders. It is time you fellows
with the authority was a-puttin’ a crimp in
them. They come in, and trap a district
dry, and then they beat it out for some-
wheres else. A real trapper nurses his
fur along. That’s what I've done for ten
year an’ more now, but, hell, what’s the
good when the man a mile or two up the
trail is bleedin’ his line white an’ gettin’
all the fur that belongs to next year an’
the year after that?”

There was a sound of dishes and cutlery
in the kitchen, as if Jean Protheroe and Slim
were clearing away the supper utensils and
getting the dishes washed up. Jean’s low
musical contralto voice could be heard in
whispers as she conversed with Slim, while
the latter seemed to be amusing her with his
antics and sayings. Young Greene moved
restlessly in his chair.

Over from Greene, Sergeant Colin Dal-
gleish was watching Dave Protheroe under
his shaggy eyebrows, and he fancied he
noticed Dave's eyes also rove in the direc-
tion of the kitchen as he talked, and once or
twice he detected a frown pass over the old
fellow’s face. Dave Protheroe realized that
his two visitors were aware of the strained
situation and he tried his best to excuse it,
but he merely succeeded in making things
worse.

Makes Excuses FOR COUSIN

“Slim’s been up here for four year now,”
he remarked, sucking hard at his pipe.
“We're cousins, Slim an’ me, though, gosh,
I could be his father. When his kinfolk
died, he was brung up with us uns. Slim

continued gruffly,

in the city, in an office job; or in some store.
