Air Transportation Meeting On June 27th the Air Transport Committee for the Canadian Transport Commission held a public meeting in Watson Lake thus enabling people of the area to present briefs outlining their concerns. The meeting was well attended with the meeting room being packed. However, in spite of the many concerns regarding Air Transportation in the area only four briefs were presented all of them from Cassiar residents or organisations. Gary Periard presented two briefs, one on behalf of the Community Club and one which he presented for Cecile Pratt and Isabel Crossley who were unable to attend the meeting. Brian Lundale presented a brief on behalf of both local unions and Adolf Penno made a presentation on behalf of School District 87 _and Brinco Mining. Concerns mentioned in all the briefs were: a) Cost of service b) Availability of charter class seats c) Denial of access to special seat sales d) Re-routing without prior warning e) Scheduling - the fact that there were only three flights a week during winter f) The lack of services at Watson Lake Airport as well as inferior service on the actual flights - the meals being cited as an example Other concerns mentioned were: a) Loss of luggage b) The fact that the reduced service affects other areas, for example, mail service and news- paper delivery c) The withdrawal of C.P. Air’s-service be- tween Watson Lake and Whitehorse The people presenting the briefs were question- ed by the transport commission and by repre- sentatives of C.P. Air and Trans North Turbo Air. C.P. Air and T.N.T.A. were also given an opportunity to address some of the concerns raised in the briefs. There are several more meetings to be held throughout the north. The committee will then teview all the briefs before compiling a report ' for the Ministry. It will be at least the end of October peters, the People concerned receive Scholarship Awarded Brinco Limited recently announced that the recipient of the 1984 Sir Mark Turner Scholar- ship is Wendy Cartwright. Wendy, whose parents Peter and Betty both work for the Cassiar Div- ision of Brinco Mining Limited, is entering her second year at the University of Victoria where she is majoring in Mathematics and Geography in preparation for a career in teaching. Upon graduation: from Cassiar Secondary School, Wendy was awarded the Cassiar Mine Leadership Award as well as both the Lions Scholarship and the School. District 87 Award. Ralph Wong, who continues his work at U.B.C., was also awarded the Sir Mark Turner Scholarship for the second year. Ralph’s father, an employee of the Cassiar Division, works in the Powerhouse. The Sir Mark Turner Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $3500 was established in 1981 and is available to a child of an employee of the Brinco Group who is studying at the post- secondary level. The scholarship may be renewed for a second year if the winner maintains an appropriate academic standing. ‘graduated in May, 1984, Mr. Ralph P.W. Wong, winner of the 1983 — Sir Mark Turner Memorial Scholarship, and eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. C.W. (Ralph) Wong, from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree (Irst class) with a major in Biology/Pre- medical. Ralph has been successful in his application and has been accepted to U.B.C, Medical School, commencing in September, 1984. Only 120 applicants are accepted. Ralph will be in med- ical school for five years and then will probably specialise. During the summer, Ralph worked on research at U.B.C. into Down’s Syndrome and multiple schlerosis and expects to continue research work in the fall as well as attending medical school. | Mr. Ian Wong, Ralph’s brother, is also attend- ing U.B.C. and is in his third year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He will apply to law school this year. R.C.M.P. Court News Court was held at Good Hope Lake for the first time on August 2nd, 1984. The court room was set up by United Native Nations Local 167 and court ran smoothly. It was completed at 12 noon just 2 1/2 hours after commencing - the shortest court held in the Cassiar area over the past three years. Court may be held at Good Hope Lake once a year at the discretion of Judge Varcoe. PETER JAKESTA - charged with drinking in a puD|C place, fined $100. SCOTT DENNIS - charged with assault. He was placed on a peace bond for six months. GLEN COMPTON - charged with possession of a narcotic. He received a conditional discharge and probation for nine months. _ JOSEPH BEDDINGTON - charged with possess- ion of a narcotic. He was fined $200. LARSEN JOHNNY - charged -with mischief, fined $100, ordered to pay $165 restitution and put on six months probation. On July 30 five residents of Good Hope Lake were in a vehicle driven by Steven Porter which went off the right side of the road and rolled several times. The accident occurred at French Creek Hill. Jack Chief received a broken neck; Lynda Porter a broken pelvis; Steven Porter a broken collarbone and a_ hairline fracture in his arm. William Johnny and Henry Lun received only bruises and scrapes. Charges have been laid against the driver, Steven Porter. For the past several years a band of sheep has been coming down to the road near Good Hope Lake. On August 3rd several Good Hope Lake residents went out there while some tour- ists were taking pictures of the sheep, shot and killed one sheep and wounded another. The wounded sheep was tracked for miles but was not recovered. Ivan Johnny has _ been charged with illegally killing wild life and numer- ous related charges. Investigations are still under- way and other charges may be laid. Charles Thompson of Tucson, Arizona went off the right side of the road on the 60 km turn east of Cassiar. No one was injured. However, the truck and trailer he was towing were severely. damaged. They did manage to get it repaired - well enough to get home. Exercise your right to vote Sept.4th
