Doug is pictured here along with Bert, the guide, and the packhorses By the time we had got about half way down the trail, we were low enough so that the snow turned to rain. Doug and I were walking, lead- ing our horses, each with a buck on its back. We made it back in a little under the four hours, in spite of two of us walking, probably because it was down hill. That is the record of a deer ob- tained by a party who were only hunting as an incidental activity; we were in no sense a hunting party. I have no doubt that to go in the same district with nothing to do but hunt, would mean that one got his game within the first two or three days. The difficulty, of course, would be in getting the meat to the road if one had no horses. However, if two went in together, even without aid, they should be able to pack out their animals in two or three trips; but in all probability it would be possible to walk out and bring a horse in for We Specialize in Frigidaires, Furniture and Piano Moving Packing and Crating—Storage LIFT VAN SERVICE VICTORIA TO VANCOUVER Mellwaine Bros. American Hunters Regular Visitors Many hunters from across the border in Washington come up regu- larly every year to hunt. Of course, they invariably have professional guides and pack trains. Indeed, it is illegal for the holder of a non- resident hunting license to hunt with- out a guide, for their own protection. It is easier to get lost in the moun- tains than one might think. One of them told me that he preferred to hunt this side of the border largely because there were fewer hunters in the bush, and hence less chance of being accidentally shot! The best guides charge $3.00 per day for each horse, plus $12.50 a day for the guide with his horse. The usual outfit consists of a saddlehorse for each member of the party, and from two to four or five packhorses, depending on the duration of the trip, and the size of the party. If there are more than two sportsmen, there must be two guides, as no more than two hunters are allowed to be looked after by one guide. As a guide’s popularity depends largely on his success in locating game for the sportsman to shoot at, he does every- thing in his power to get one in range of game. A guide is not allowed to carry a rifle unless the party is going ater grizzly; if Bert had been with us as a guide he wouldn’t have been able to shoot a deer for himself. However, he was with us as a packer only, hence, as he had a hunting license, he was entitled to hunt. Where to Find Them When the season first opens in the fall, the deer are generally high up, near the summit of the mountains; as the season advances, they are driven down toward the valley by the weather. By the end of the season, they are right down in the valleys, usually in the very thick timber, where they are hard to find. The best time to hunt seems to be late Septem- ber or early October, while they are still well up out of the dense under- growth and heavy timber of the lower lands.
