The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel that transcends modern ideas of love and sexu- ality set against the emotionally tumultuous landscape of Communist Czechoslovakia. With segments in which the narrator speaks directly to the cast that drives the novel toward new understanding of human nature. Sexuality and love are key intertwining themes in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The differ- ences that make up each of these two key themes surround and infuse the marriage of Tereza and Thomas, as well as the relation- ships Thomas has with all of his mistresses. The one thing that all readers must take from The Unbearable Lightness of Being is the knowledge that life plunges forward with- out even the remotest chance of ceasing. That life is full of irrevo- cable choices and is centred in a_ world where everything occurs only once. Existence in a world where one seems to have no power is both frightening and freeing. An ‘incredible lightness of being’ occurs when realize that our actions in both our public and private spheres inevitably intertwine and there is nothing we as specks floating through the world can do to influence either sphere of our lives after each action has already occurred.
