of business nobody would question it. No,
it certainly is a masterpiece of counter-
feiting, but counterfeit it is.”

The U. S. Treasury Dept. in Washing:
ton was notified at once. Secret Service
men went into a huddle and examined the
notes. There was little chance of deceiving
these experts.

“This stuff, “one of them said, fingering
the spurious notes, “is common butter
paper.”

“Butter paper!” one of the men ex:
claimed.

“Yes, two pieces fastened together by a
flexible binding medium. Not glue, or mu-
cilage, but something very flexible, like
rubber cement. The man who made this
stuff is an expert. We'd better get on his
trail at once.”

A week passed. The teller of a bank in
El Centro, California was counting the
cash in a deposit. One of the notes, a ten
dollar one, seemed different. He picked it
up and examined it closely.

“What’s the matter?” the depositor asked
anxiously. “There’s nothing wrong with
that bill is there?”

“IT don’t know.” the teller confessed. “It
looks all right to me, but it- feels greasy.
Perhaps it was carried by a mechanic.”

“I do’a good deal of business with
mechanics.” the merchant said. “Their
money feels greasy at times.”

The teller laughed and accepted the bill.
But as soon as the merchant left he took
up the matter with the manager. That
worthy was puzzled, and like all bank
managers who are puzzled by money mat-
ters, he sought counsel. This time he se-
lected the U. S. Secret Service as his coun-
sellors. They soon told him about the
money. It was spurious.

“But it looks good.” he protested.

“The colour,” one the Treasury Depart-
ment experts informed him, “is blue green,
not a great deal of difference, but enough.
The serial numbers too are a trifle dark.”

That banker shouldn’t have felt bad. The
president of the Croker, California, bank
also had a note. It was a pretty thing, but
phoney. He spotted it when the teller
brought it to him. Its serial number was
black instead of blue.

Secret service agents poured out ot
Washington to gather up this supposedly
excellent money. The results were astonish-
ing. Notes were turning up from all direc-
tions, even as far east as Pennsylvania.
They were replicas of bank notes from
several Pacific coast towns and cities. A few
were found on the Canadian side of the
border. Tellers were accepting them with-
out question. The situation, so far as the
U.S. Treasury mattered, was alarming.

GENIUS MAKES COUNTERFEIT BILLS
FROM BUTTER PAPER

Experts began to study the notes with a
view to discovering how they were made.
It was evident that they were the work of a
genius who had managed to perfect a pro-
cess that would eventually have devasting
results if it were not brought to an end.
