directly overhead and once climbed upward in such a manner that at one time or another the tail, the back, and the vermiculated under surface of the body came into sharp focus. Near Smithers, July 17, when one in immature plumage was dis- turbed at the edge of a forest opening it flew out carrying some object which later it dropped. This proved to be a portion Oia snowshoe rabbit, chiefly skin from the back and head with ears attached. At Shafer Lake, August 7, one flushed from thick alders on the lakeshore and disappeared in the woods. Immediately after- wards two female mallards which had been concealed in a small patch of sedges directly below where the hawk had stood flew out from this hiding place. Sharp-shinned Hawk--Accipiter striatus Vieillot. One adult was seen at each of the following localities on the dates given, viz.; Puntchesakut Lake, May 21; Bouchie Lake, June 10, August 17; Ootsa Lake, August 4; Vanderhoof, August 15. At Puntchesakut Lake, September 1 and September 5, a young female was observed hunting along the lakeshore brush. Swainson Hawk--Buteo swainsoni Bonaparte, A mounted specimen, without data but reported as shot in autumn near Smithers some years ago, is in the collection of Mr. J. B. Langston. This is a bird of the year, apparently a male, heavily marked on the lower surface. Rough-legged Hawk--Buteo lagopus (Pontoppidan). A photograph of a bird of the year in the light phase, shot near Sumit Lake about October 1, 1943, has been examined. There is a mounted specimen, shot in autumn some years ago near Smithers, in Mr. J. B. Langston's collection. This also is a young, light-coloured lonligel.. Saya
