On hands and knees they entered the
igloo, still conscious of that lurking
atmosphere of menace. Fur-clad
women and children lolled on carti-
bou-skin shingabees spread atop a
snow-bed that covered half the
floor-space; two tray-shaped stone
blubber-lamps casting a ruddy glow
about the rancid-smelling interior
with soot-blackened snow-walls. Lank
haired hunters had discarded fur
ahtegis and squatted about naked to
the waist, watching the strangers
with obsidian eyes. As Doak opened
his bundle and displayed to the crafty
eyes of the angatkok the presents of
awls, knives, needles, fish-hooks and
scarlet cloth, he was relieved to ob-
serve him lean eagerlv forward and

hear his guttural ejaculations of
pleased surprise.
“All this the Great White

Angatkok sent you, Olibuk,” Doak
assured him, “because he knows you
to be an honest man who will not
countenance evil-doing.

Asks For Help

Therefore he desires your help in
bringing justice upon the murderers
of Pugnana.” For a period of in-
tolerable suspense the angatkok re-
mained silent, cupidity battling with
his native cunning and treachery.
Finally he turned to Silas.

“Tell your master that the Great
Angatkok of the Kablunats must be
a wise man to deal thus generously
with Olibuk. The men you want are
in that igloo at the east end of the
village. Agnagvik (he pointed to the
evil-looking Eskimo with the goatee)
will take you there and see they go
peaceably with you!”

Still fearful of underlyin ey
treachery, Doak followed Agnagvik
through the snow-tunnel and through
the squalid village of snowhouses,
then crawled behind him into a small
isolated igloo, followed by Woolams
and Silas.

Aligoomiak, a slim- sloe-eyed youth
of 17, was devouring a dish of
ookchuk and paid his scant attention

Still there wasn’t a moment to be
lost, since at any moment their

fellow-tribesmen might undergo a
complete change of attitude. Hitch-
ing up their dogs, they bid a hasty
farewell to the Angatkok and headed
west across the icefields. As the dim
shore-line of Kent Peninsula was en-
folded in the gloom of Arctic dark-
ness and the booming reverberations
of polar-bear-gut drums _ throbbed
across the empurpled wastes, Doak
turned an axious eye to Woolams.
“We'll keep hitting the trail all
night,” he warned. “Those damned
Cogmollocks back there are apt to
change their minds and try to jump
us and harpoon us while we're sleep-

Unseen Danger Lurks

On through an endless succession
of dark Arctic days and nights they
drove their dog-teams westward, re-
alizing to the full that unseen danger
might lurk all about them since they
were still in the heart of the Cog-
mollock hunting grounds, with hunt-
ing parties scattered about the ice-
fields in search of polar bears and
seals.

Then, without warning, a blinding
blizzard broke upon them from the
North West with the fierce impetu-
osity of the Arctic. Bedding and erub
