food, or goods to trade with the
natives. Yet, across the rocks, just half
4 mile away, Janes had food and trade
goods to see him through for another
year.

At last, in desperation, Florence
trudged across the snow-flailed rocks.
While he’d hardly expected to be met
with open arms the crafty gleam
of avarice that shone in Janes’ deep-
set eyes acted like a cold douche to
his hopes. In a few words he blurted
out his requirements. All he needed
was some flour and bacon and other

Janes chuckled to himself. At last,
after long, bitter months of waiting
the moment had come that he'd
prayed for. At last he had his enemy
entirely at his mercy. Well, he’d now
show him who held the whip-hand.
Disguising his jubilation he eyed the
opposition trader coldly. “Why, sure.”
he told him, “Ill let you have all the
grub you want. For your own use,” he
added hastily.

Florence brightened.

A Rough Deal

my own prices. My own price, you
know. You'll have to give me half
your last winter’s trade in furs!”

“What!” Florence gazed at him,
“Ten thousand dollars’ worth of
skins for two hundred dollars’ worth
of grub and a couple of sides of rancid
sowbelly! You're crazy. Those are
company furs... they aren’t my skins
to sell.”

“Take it or leave it,” Janes turned
coldly on his heel.

Dazed, realizing for the first time
the extent of his extremity, Florence
staggered across the white wastes to
his poverty-stricken post. How was he
going to exist without fuel or food
during those long, dark and awful
months of Arctic winter till ship-time
came around again?

Help came unexpectedly from
Nukudlah. Urged by their headman,
Eskimos brought polar bear and seal
meat for food, and blubber to burn
to warm his hut. Forced, at last to
go native Florence lived like the
Eskimos themselves in a snow igloo,
dining on half-raw caribou meat, the
nauseating flesh of seal and semi-
putrid polar bear flesh, with red-
cheeked beauties always willing to
relieve night’s boredom.

ing blubber lamps. Nukudlah, they
said, rarely beat his wife. He was a

nanuk, the polar bear—the terror of
the ice-floes, and ai’vuk, the tusked
walrus, with a facility that was the
envy of all hunters. Upon this
monarch of the polar wastes the rosy-
cheeked ladies of the snowhouses
looked with undisguised desire. But
Nukudlah, they said, had eyes for
only one woman apart from his wife;
that skinny little Kudlu with the big
soft eyes like a frightened caribou, and
a red mouth like raw meat, who wasn’t
even strong enough to carry a decent
