Page 8 April 1988 Cassiar Courier MINOR HOCKEY ON THE MOVE! NOVICES HEADING DOWN THE ICE The past few weeks have been busy for our hockey players as several teams have been travelling to participate in tournaments. All teams have gained more experience through this out of town participation and are to be congratulated for their efforts. Whether they have won or lost, they have displayed good sportsmanship for the most part and have been complimented by their host towns. ~ FORT NELSON The weekend of March 4th to 6th saw twelve Novice A players, eight Atom players and 20 parents travel by air to Fort Nelson for their Annual Novice-Atom Tournament. In between dips in the hotel. pool and chasing (or being chased) by girls, all players managed to play a minimum of four games of exciting hockey. STANDING GUARD NOVICE DIVISION _ Our Novice team, ranging in age from 5 to 9 years, were outclassed by the teams from Fort St. John and Fort Nelson, who played mostly 8-9 year old players. Our team was defeated in all four games with the scores being: Fort St. John 17-1 (lone goal by Christopher Woodrow); Westcoast 8-4: Northwestel 9-1 (goal scored with 1% minutes to go by Robby Howard). The game with Watson Lake was more evenly matched as the score of 8-6 indi- cates. This game was tied after two periods at 5-5. : The Novice scoring summary (goals/ assists)) overall were: | Christopher Woodrow 3/1; Robby Howard 3/0; Ricky Howard 2/1; Aaron Tripp 2/1; and Jeffery Johnston 1/0. Those travelling with the Novice team were: Ricky and Robby Howard, David Hardy, Christopher Woodrow, Ken Smith, Dillon Thi- beault-Johnston, Morgan Quinn, Kristian Evans, Aaron Tripp, Justin Creyke, and Andrew and Jeffery Johnston (who had driven up from Vancouver to make the tournament!) BUT I’M FASTER SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSGSS _ ATOM DIVISION Our eight players teamed up with six players from Watson Lake to take second place in the tournament. The Watson Lake/Cassiar team tied Cablevision 3-3 in the first game, tied the Elks 5-5 in the second game and defeated Fort St. John by a score of 7-2 in the third game. By the won/lost point system, Cassiar/Watson met Fort St. John later Sunday for the play- offs. . . losing by a score of 5-4. The score was tied up at the thirteen minute mark of the third period, with the opposition managing the winning goal at the seventeen minute mark. Cassiar/ Watson came on strong but were not able to find the mesh behind a “hot’’ Fort St. John goalie. Both goalies, David Pascal and Gilbert Johnny played exceptionally well and their net minding was significant in the outcome of all games. Atom players from Cassiar included David - Pascal, Andrew Smith, sedi Cameron, Jayson Quinn, Damian McGuinness, Bradley Creyke, Stephen Howard and Jo y Harrison accompanied ‘by Coach Ken. eee Watson Lake players were Sadler Brown, Gilbert Johnny, Dwayne Donessey, Peter Holt, |Andrew Groat, Jamie St. Louie and Aaron ‘Lloyd, along with their Coach John Lloyd. BANTAM/MIDGETS AT WHITEHORSE Wayne Huber and Garry Periard took over the coaching duties for the Bantam/Midget team as they travelled to Whitehorse the March 4th-6th weekend. Our . boys travelled with only nine players and after losing one to injuries, were able to ‘borrow’ from Faro. All games were hard hitting and the Cassiar boys had to keep the adrenaline flowing with their shortage of players, coming out in the end with one win over Faro and three losses. Cassiar defeated Faro 13-5 in their first game and lost in a re- match 7-2. Against Whitehorse the score was a 6-7 loss and a 3-5 loss. Considering our players had to play up into the Midget Division and these were their first tournament games of the season, they did very well. The overall scoring summary is as follows; Reg Etzerza 6/3; Marty Marion 8/5; Garred Huber 4/3; Dave Liddle 3/4; John Cavanagh 1/3 and Danny Walters 0/1. SOMEONE MUST HAVE SCORED ... THE MOMS ARE HAPPY! CASSIAR SKI TEAM RESULTS Thanks to enthusiastic Ski Coach Jordy Edmonds, several Cassiar youngsters participated in the Yukon Ski Cup. The Cassiar phase of this event was held Sunday, March 6th at the Cassiar Ski Club. Skiers from Watson Lake and Cassiar participated in the downhill races. The following weekend the newly formed Cassiar team travel- led to Watson Lake for a two day event. Conditions were testy as the weather warmed considerably in Watson; but the Yukon Cup proved to be successful, with Cassiar bringing home first, second and third place medals. Thanks to coach Jordy Edmonds and Garry ‘Periard for their time, and to all the parents and specta- tors who travelled to Watson Lake to cheer on the team. 5 | THE 1988 CASSIAR SKI TEAM vows ’ WATSON LAKE PHASE: Cassiar Courier April 1988 Page 9 FACE-OFF IN FRONT OF FORT NELSON'S NET MINOR HOCKEY TOURNAMENT By the time this paper goes to press, the Annual Minor Hockey Tournament will be history. Once again approximately 200 youngsters from Watson Lake, Faro/Ross River, Whitehorse, Fort Nelson and Iskut will have come and gone and our 1987-88 minor hockey season will be winding down to it’s finale. The results of the tournament will be in the next edition of the Courier. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks for coming to all teams who participated. A special thank you to all who opened their homes and made these youngsters welcome during the tournament. -ANNUAL WIND-UP BANQUET All parents of minor hockey players will be contacted by either Helen Joseph or Marvel Knudslien to bring their favorite ‘‘Pot Luck” dish to the banquet to be held on Wed- nesday, April 13th at the Rec Center. tel SSS Ss ss = SSSSES ESSEC GS SoS eR Se RRR GH SESE ee Ag -Bonspieling - At Home And Away The Annual Cassiar’s 34th Annual Bonspiel was held the week- end of Mar. 17 - 20th. The theme was “Roman” and many curlers really had the “Roman” spirit. Walter did his usual excellent job of turning the club into a Roman forum. After the potluck supper Friday night, curlers were entertained by several teams performing short skits. We had the Greg Morgan team performing to the music of “Guitarzan”. Greg (looking as if he was raiding the lost ark) conducted Helen on guitar, Heather on the mike and Lisa straight out of the jungle. For this they were awarded first prize. Chinese hood, Jay Lee - Leader of the Pack, hussled Swivel Hips Psenko, Hot Lips and Cool Cat (Shipley Twins, and guess which one was Hot Lips) until he wiped out. We almost had to call the morality squad as Bill Pratt strutted and streaked, Ethel was so impressed, she also stripped and streaked, but Joe and Bubs finally managed to control Bill and Ethel and chased them out of the club, to the immortal words “Don’t look Ethel”, Danny Harrison, Darren, Marv, Graham and’ Dianne showed us a very funny, but silent, rendition of “Life on a Park Bench” or “How fleas can clear a seat’’. Heather, Judy and Angie went to the beach looking for someone in a yellow polka dot bikini and Glen, Bill, Ginette and Dianne sang a lovely song, unfortunately they all sang different words. Stan Deyo then wrapped things up with his famous Roman address to the peons. After all this people had to curl all night! Saturday’s dance saw many Roman costumes. The Emperor and his Centurians and Gladiators arrived in a genuine Roman chariot, and scattered gold coins to the peasants. During a Band Break at the dance, June Evans did a SUPERB job entertaining the curlers with poems and songs about some of our more notorious curlers and their antics. Thanks June, it was a brave thing you did. During the dance we held a “Calcutta” to raise money for the Sick Children’s Hospital in Van- couver. Each of the Semi finalists in the A B C events and the quarter finalists in the D event were auctioned ' off to the highest bidder. We raised over $2600 through the auction, half of which was donated to the hospital. Thank you Paul MacRae for organizing the fund raiser and thanks to all the curlers who participated and raised this money. The winners of each event are as follows: A EVENT - Greg and Blair Morgan, Heather Joseph and ° Angie Gorski. B EVENT - Gerry and Georgina Pisonic and Ivan and Dragica Vidovic.
