Accident on Stewart Hwy. Takes Life

On September 23, 1974 at 4:00 p.m. there was an
accident on the Stewart Highway, 45 miles from Cassiar.

A large bus converted to a camper containing 13 passen-
gers was crowded to the edge of the road. The soft
shoulder gave way and the bus upset on its side in a

10 foot ditch. .

Edward Sones of England was fatally injured in the
accident and Claudia Dick of Saratoga, California, re-
ceived minor injuries and was held in the Cassiar Hospit-
al over night under observation.

The group originated in Eugene, Oregon and have been
travelling since gugust 11, 1974 as an education group.
They travelled the Alaska Highway to points in Alaska
and were returning to Eugene via the Stewart Highway.

The group had stopped in Cassiar earlier in the day to
make inquiries about Mine and Mill Tours.

It is not known at this time as to how their journey:

The Cassiar Ambulance was dispatched to pick up the
injured.

Congratulations to all the new executive.
President Fred Hewett expects the new curling season
will be off to a flying start about October 15, 1974.

SE NIOR HOCKEY

Senior Hockey held their first General Meeting and
had a very good turnout. The new executive was elected
and the President is Roger Borsato, Vice President is
Gerry Harvey and Secretary is yours truly. The meeting
decided to ask the Arena for the same days and times for
Senior Hockey as in previous years, that is Tuesday and
Thursday nights starting at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday after-
noon at 1:00 p.m. with exhibition games being held at
7:00 p.m. on Saturday nights for outside teams. The
admission charge to the games will be the same as pre-
vious $1.00 for adults and 50¢ for children. For your
information this is split on a 50% basis with the Arena
to assist in the upkeep of the Arena.

BADMINTON

Due to the extra large cost of maintaining Badmin-
ton Racquets they will no longer be available for loan.
There will, however, be a limited number of racquets for
sale and these will be in the low and medium price range
and will be at cost plus freight. There are a few left
and can be obtained from the attendant on duty. Badmin-
ton birds, although in short supply, are also available
at less than cost. Broken strings on racquets will be
repaired at cost. This change has been brought about by
the careless handling of the racquets that were available
for loan and the fact that the Machine Shop finds it im-

possible to repair them any more.

A successful Badminton Clinic was held Saturday and

Sunday, October 19§& 20th in the Cassiar School Gym.

Instructors Bob Paynter and Jack Rogers from Vancouver
had 40 children and 9 adults at the clinics and everyone

«benefited from the teaching of techniques and strategies

of playing. The clinic was sponsored by the B.C. Badmin-
ton Association and the B.C. Recreation Commissioner.

Cassiar has most Improved Library

On September 7, the Cassiar Public Library had
their annuanl visitations from the British Columbia
Library Commission. Librarians Mr. J. O'Hare and Miss
Bannerman were in town during the afternoon and evening.
They were on their annual trip from Dawson Creek up the
Alaska Highway visiting all the member libraries of the
B.C. Public Library System.

They were very favourably impressed with the im-
provements made in the Cassiar Library over the past
year. The cramped quarters have been enlarged, giving
a lot more space for books and borrowers alike.

Among the P.R.A.L. members the Cassiar SS boer was
the most improved for this past year.
