Sept 25, 200 Know Your NUGSS The Millennium summer has ended and we have all returned to UNBC to continue our academic pursuits. Those late nights of studying and of course partying are here at last. Take a break from you books and read about the exciting things happening in NUGSS. NUGSS, the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (for those of you who do not know what it stands for), has space in the school paper. We will be using it to provide you with important information on things such as ongoing campaigns, issues, motions and whatever else we can squeeze in. First it is important to answer the question that most people ask. What does the student society do? Article two of the NUGSS constitution states that: “The Northern Undergraduate Student Society will work to facilitate an awareness of the rights and views of the members by acting in a fair and democrat- ic manner through the promo- tion, education, and repre- sentation of undergraduate students at UNBC.” We are here to represent the student body and provide services for you. A new board was elected last March. This board will be in place for the coming 2000/2001 academic year. Pictures and the equally cool Matt MacRae Genereal Manager He’s a free loving, hardworking, bald, toe- nail painting, chain smoking, whitewater kayaking, mocha drink- ing, easy going, light hearted man. If you have questions | about NUGSS he’s the | man to ask. “live” versions of board mem- bers are available in the NUGSS office. Also, when you come into the office you will no longer see the familiar face of April Hawes. April has been the manager of the stu- dent society for the fast five years. She is on maternity leave and is scheduled to have her first child in October. We wish her all the best. A replacement was found in a former UNBC student named Matt Macrae. Joining Matt is the new administrative assis- tant, the bubbly Morna Goussis. Stop by and make them feel welcome. Over the summer all was quiet on the Northern Front. There were very few students and much work to be done. The Student Society was busy organizing the major events that have occurred in the past three weeks. Student Success Week: This happened a week before classes were scheduled to begin. Most of the partici- pants were first time UNBC students. NUGSS was a proud supporter of the dry activities for the week. Orientation Week: This was the first week of school. All those agendas and xlarge NUGSS MUGS were not enough to satisfy the demand. The week cul- minated with the sixth annual BACKYARD BBQ where the Watchmen, Rhymes with Orange, and Kings _ Inc. played to a sold out crowd. Important Motions: Students have been lobby- ing for an increase in the amount of funding that goes towards scholarships and bursaries. NUGSS_ has joined the battle by allocating money towards a bursary or bursaries. NUGSS will donate $10,000 per/yr to the NUGSS Bursary Endowment Fund up to a maximum of $50,000. The _ interest accrued on this will help cre- ate awards for students. A recent motion was passed to donate $700 to the coun- seling center to help fund the faculty/staff/student brunch on October 1 2000. Student clubs are always looking for an increase to their funding. In order to ensure that NUGSS and clubs are responsible for the money that is distributed, clubs will be required to sub- mit monthly financial state- ments. This policy has been in place for some time but has never been implemented. Furthermore clubs that main- tain their budgets will increase their ability to acquire increased funding. The Student Society has moved the used book market online. Check out books4exchange.com to either a) register your books or b) see what is available. We would like to thank Tami McHugh for commencing the used book market. We wish (Moe) Moezine Hasham Director of External Affairs He is a 3rd Year interna- tional studies major, and looks after the regional campuses. He also moni- tors government policies on education, media rela- tions, and is a liason with other universities among many other activities. her the best in her future endeavors. An interesting topic was brought-to the board’s atten- tion recently; credit card solic- itation on campus. Credit cards as was mentioned, are important to establishing a credit rating. However, it was also of concern that credit cards are a cause of increased student debt. A motion was suggested that the student society actively discourage credit card solici- tation during the periods of October 31 through December 31, 2000 and between February 28 and April 30, 2001. This was motioned because there are many ways of applying for a credit card. Also, credit card solicitation on campus can be an easy way for students to obtain money at the end of the semester when they may be desperate for cash. The motion was defeated 5-4. These are some of the issues that NUGSS deals with on a regular basis. If you have something to say, attend the board meeting on Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm and voice your opin- ion. Minutes of all meetings are available in the office for stu- dents to read. General Info: The student society is contin- uing to research options for a Student Union Building. The building is far from reality but “The the process must begin now. We are also researching options to increase revenue. Please be aware that there is a bi-election this month to elect a new Director of Internal Affairs. The cam- paign continues and voting will take place on September 26 and 27. The Student Society has exciting committees you can join this semester. The Health Care Committee has been formed to research the feasibility of a Student Health Plan. : External Affairs Committee will tackle the issues of regional campus concerns, government poli- cies on education, CFS and CASA affiliation (if any), and much more. If you want more info on these committees or you want to sign up stop by the NUGSS office. Well, this concludes the hap- penings of the Northern Undergraduate Student Society. See you in two weeks and keep your eyes open for the NUGSS newslet- ter. Moezine Hasham Director of External Affairs PS.
