Thus, if a camera lens has a focal length of three inches, all pictures taken of objects over 100 feet away will be in focus if the lens is set at “infinity”, or three inches from the film plane. To take a facsimile photo- graph with this camera, it would be neces- sary to draw out the lens to six inches from the film plane, and then place the camera six inches from the subject to be photographed. It will be readily seen, therefore, that as the area photographed Binocular stereoscope mucroscope. is exactly the same size as the picture, the subject of the picture can be no larger than the film used. PostaGe Stamp Usep to Osratn Ricut Size In making facsimile pictures with the ordinary camera, the ground glass back is always used to make sure the picture is in focus and that it is exactly the same size. For the latter purpose a postage stamp is often placed alongside the object to be photographed, and another stamp placed on the ground glass. When the image of the stamp beside the subject being photographed is the same size as the stamp on the ground glass, the camera is accurately set for facsimile reproduc- tion. The use ofa “view” or ordinary cam- era had a number of drawbacks which hampered the work of the fingerprint ex- perts and took up much of their time. Among these might be cited the following examples. A tripod must be carried to photograph all articles which cannot be placed on a table. It is impossible to take pictures of this nature with a view camera held in the hand. A source of lighting must be taken to the scene by the expert, as he may find latent prints in a dj lit area, or at night. He must make 3 separate and individual determination of exposure with each subject photographed depending on his light source and yp rounding light reflecting areas. Each Pic- ture must be accurately focused ang measured. The equipment is cumbersome and at times quite heavy. Frequently there may be a latent print on a dog frame, wall or other surface at a pp. siderable height from the ground, ang much higher than the camera tripod ywilj reach, The technician must then summoy his resourcefulness to the utmost in figur- ing how he will get his camera into posi- DOMINION HOTEL E.
