One of them had an unused railway ticket which matched the one found beside the re- covered taxi, that is, it was also for passage between Trail and Creston. The taxi driver readily identified the two men who had held him at gun point a few hours before. On January 8th, 1946, both men were charged with steal- ing the car and a sum of money from the taxi driver by threats of violence with a 45 Colt automatic pistol. Before the charge was proceeded with, they were taken to Trail and charged there with robbery with violence. T hey both entered a plea of “Guilty” and were sentenced to three years in the B. C. Penitentiary. On being returned to Nelson, they faced a preliminary hearing and were committed for trial. On January 14th, 1947, they both appeared in County Court at Nelson, and electing to be tried in this court, both again pleaded “Guilty”. They were each sentenced to serve four years in the penitentiary, and to receive ten strokes of the paddle. The prison sen- tence is to run concurrently with the sentence already imposed by the Police Magistrate at Trail. Thus by excellent co-ordination of effort and complete co-operation between City and Provincial Police Forces, two major crimes were solved and the ae apprehended within 12 hours. Had this cordial and prompt spirit of united effort not existed, it is difficult to say how far the two fugitives might have gone and what other crimes could have been laid at their door.
