History The present mining property of Cassiar Asbestos Cor- poration Limited is situated within the Cassiar Mountain Range in the extreme northern area of British Columbia. The property is 85 miles by an all-weather gravel sur- faced road from the Alaska Highway at Mile 648.5, which in turn is 18 miles west of Watson Lake, Y.T. By staking and direct purchase, Conwest Exploration Company Limited acquired the present group of mining claims in 1950 and the Company of Cassiar Asbestos Cor- poration Limited was subsequently formed to develop and mine the orebody. While a pilot mill was erected in 1952, it was in 1953 that the present mill was constructed and fibre first pro- duced. The townsite of Cassiar is situated in a valley at an elevation of 3500 feet while the actual mine is located 6 miles by road to the north at an elevation of 6100 feet. The asbestos ore is mined by open pit methods and brought down to the mill by a tramline over a distance of three’ miles. As a result of increased sales of fibre, it has now be- come necessary to operate the mine and mill on a year- round basis. To keep the mill operating all year necessitates the Company stockpiling ore during the summer months and in this connection we have a dry ore storage and an out- isde stockpile. Owing to the location of the orebody and the side slopes encountered, the mining of waste creates as much of a problem as that of the ore as an average of 4 tons of waste have to be disposed for every ton of ore mined. At the present time, the Company is mining an aver- age of 700,000 tons of ore every year and an average of 200 tons of fibre is produced every day to be transported to Vancouver and the world markets.
