e Page 2 News Michael Horner Returns to UNBC | for Second Round of Lectures and Debate By: Andrea Larson This past week the Interfaith Chaplaincy has once again put on a series of Spiritual Awareness Days. This event lasted from February 7 - 9 and students were invited to learn more about different religion and _ spiritualities through different tables and displays around campus. The events were sponsored by the Interfaith Chaplaincy and participating churches in the community. Key events included were the lectures and debates given by Michael Horner. Horner is a speaker who trav- els around North America giving lectures on topics such as “Does God Exist?” and “Can There Be Morality Without God?” He is a grad- uate of the University of Calgary in math and psychol- ogy, with a masters degree in philosophy from the University of Toronto. Horner is also a part time instructor at Trinity Western University in philosophy and religious studies. Horner has also, worked for Campus Crusade for Christ for the past twenty years. On Wednesday night Horner tackled the question of moral- ity in a debate with Deborah Michael Christian debater and lec- turer came to UNBC for Spiritual Awareness Week. Horner, noted Poff, Academic Vice President and Provost as well as a professor of political sci- ence here at UNBC. Dr. Poff has a masters degree from the University of Carlton (phi- losophy) and a doctorate from the University of Guelph (philosophy). Lectures were also given on many other top- ics such as “Love, Sex and the Search for Intimacy”. Horner began his lecture on love and intimacy with a quick poll on changing the evenings lecture topic from love and sex to a “survey of ancient Aztec architecture”. Only about 5 of the 200 students present was more keen on the idea of architecture so the topic of the evening contin- ued on the trend of sex. Horner piqued the interest of the crowd quickly admitting that he “really likes sex” and that “if you can’t get fired up about sex, you better check to see if you're still breathing.” He then went on to enumer- ate the things he has learned through exhaustive research and personal experience that make for great sex. He has found what he calls the three love keys “to unlock the door to fantastic love and great sex.” The first love key talked about is intimacy. Horner quoted noted sex researchers Masters and Johnson that Student’s Celebrate 1 By: Andrea Larson Students came to school last Saturday to show their school spirit, support UNBC’s athletic teams and of course chow down on the free food. The first annual UNBC day was held in the wintergarden from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. when students were taken to CNC by shuttlebus in order to cheer on _ the Timberwolves. UNBC day began with something similar to a pep rally in which members of both the men’s and women’s Timberwolves were _ intro- duced to the waiting crowd. Moezine (Moe) Hasham, Director of External Affairs for the Northern Undergraduate Student Society. Each member of our two teams nas a history in sports to be proud of, including sev- eral players who have been part of teams that have won provincial titles. With these players on our team we're sure to have great games. A video montage, put togeth- er by several team members, followed the appearance of the Timberwolves. This video showed some _ exciting footage of previous games played by the Timberwolves and hopefully gave those who haven't previously attended games an interest in what our UNBC athletes are doing. The Timberwolves team mascot, a large cuddly wolf, then made an appearance, and members of the crowd were invited to name the Timberwolves mascot. If you have any suggestions for the name of the mascot send them in to the Northern Undergraduate Student Society for consideration. Next several other teams from around campus were invited up front including the UNBC men’s and women’s rugby teams, and the men’s junior varsity hockey team. The UNBC ski club was unable to attend UNBC day as they were training “some- where far out of town.” After all the teams were introduced students were let loose on the food, which was provided by NUGSS as an incentive for students to come out to the event. While students were munching a breakfast of fruit, eggs and other tasty things the Freeblades fencing club put on a quick demonstration, and the Medieval Combat and Culture Club hosted a “There is no way for a good sexual technique to remedy a poor emotional relationship.” What Horner feels is the most important thing for great sex is great love or intimacy. He went on to talk about the dif- ferent ways in which we view love and the different types of love saying that “people often misunderstand love and set- tle for sex, hoping it will be a shortcut to love.” Horner's second love key to great sex is permanency, because to truly have great sex a person needs the security of not worrying about losing that partner leaving you free to enjoy. Horner related that “marriage is not the goal, but it is one of the building blocks of the goal, to achieve deep intimacy.” The third and final love key is chastity, to save oneself for that one lifelong exclusive partner. Some people were a little skeptical on this point so Horner gave four reasons why a person would want to save themselves, based both on his personal experience and research. These being: 1) the positive benefits of waiting, 2) God highly rec- ommends waiting 3) None of the arguments for premarital sex are any good 4) Waiting provides freedom from the negative consequences of premarital sex. Some of great positive bene- fits of waiting given by Horner include a better relationship between spouses after mar- riage, greater patience and better sex. Horner noted that women who experience orgasm more than any other women are conservative protestant married women. Horner then asked the audi- ence whether they would “want a peanut butter sand- wich at 5:00 or a filet mignon at 8:00?” Horner left the audience of students -with a lot to think about after this lecture and if you would like to know more about Michael Horner or his opinions on other matters you can visit his web site at www.michaelhorner.com st UNBC Day tournament at 1:00. Finally, when everyone was full and all the food was gone students made their way onto the waiting shuttle to go down to the game.
