+ pe It’s really kind of disappointing when you get right down to the heart of the matter. The Northern Backyard BBQ II was supposed to be the continuation of the spirit that drove the rest of the Orientation Week. Unfortunately, it seemed to be taken over by a spirit of a different sort. But seriously, that which went off on Saturday went off very well. It’s the part of the event that fell through that is the cause for concern. So, I’d like to put forth a couple of ideas about what could be improved. First of all, what went wrong? I mean, nobody expected Bif Naked to get the microphone slammed into her mouth, but how did it happen? A little research goes a long way towards this one. First of all, the level of security all over the event was a little off. The place just wasn’t secure in some areas. an Loving Memory | c EDITORIA > The “No-in-out” clause rapidly went down as people found ways of getting around the event. Stories of people hopping fences and other abnormal behaviour abound with the people on campus. The number of ‘underdressed’ and freezing people was astonishingly high, (the students huddled around the barbeque grill was an indication of this factor), a occurance due largely in part to students not planning ahead. Secondly, what can be done to avoid such mishaps at future events? After all, if every event held at UNBC turns out like the Backyard BBQ’s, who will want to play this place in the future? One thing that was readily evident. The number of people on security, volunteer or otherwise, was less than adequate. I’m not saying that the people volunteering were incapable of doing their assigned Collin Cathcart April 30th, 1977 August 25th, 1996 tasks, but I know that a group of students that you see on a daily basis is a lot less intimidating than a group of professional security agents. The security on the beer garden proved to be more effective than it was last year, (For those of you not lucky enough to have experienced the mishap last year, you are lucky), and those involved in arranging that part of the event should be proud. But the most disturbing part of both Backyard BBQ’s is the fact that the problem occurred in a different area each time. The first one happened in the beer garden, the second in the concert. It raises some serious questions about the organization of the event. Without knowing anything about the preparations made by the organizers, it would appear that the events of last year influenced the organization of the security this year. But really, when it comes right down to it, do we really need a beer garden at an event like this? Is it essential to making a profit? It certainly seems to be essential to creating problems at such events. The other option for the people who organize events like this is to decide whether or not an event like the Backyard BBQ’s can be undertaken. They have created some headaches for all involved, but should not be allowed to become a farce in the eyes of the public. UNBC is still young and we have many steps left to go towards gaining a reputation as a reputable university. Events which are spoiled by the few reflect on the many, despite protests and arguments to the contrary. Overall, some real progress can be made from the events which have occurred and, given the right amount of dedication and perseverance, future projects at UNBC will prove to be a larger success.
