UNKNOWN On a lonely stretch of the Old Man Plain, By grass and weeds o’er grown There lies a grave, “neath a boree tree And carved in the bark, one word: “Un- known” Hidden away in that desolate spot, Where the night winds sob, and the natives clan His name unguessed, his fate unknown, Rests all that’s left of a brother man. Who knows—far away in an English town, A grey haired mother still waits in vain, For news of her boy, who sought renown And now is buried on Old Man Plain. —J. B. Tighe Epitor’s NoTE: Special Provincial Constable J. B. Tighe who penned the foregoing has had a colourful career as a soldier and policeman. Australian born, he saw service in the South African War with the Australian contingent and in 1912 did a little “free lance” fighting on the Mexican border. Eventually he settled down in British Columbia and for many years now has been stationed at Sooke Lake, Vancouver Island, as part of the detail guarding Victoria’s water supply. Keeping himself thoroughly up to date, Con- stable Tighe has a variety of hobbies that keep him busy. A crack shot with either pistol or rifle, he packs a .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum when on duty and does his own reloading. He still has time to have more than passing interest -in photography, and had it not been for the war intended taking up amateur short-wave radio. Of his poem—his first attempt in that field— he says “I wrote it about 40 years ago in Aus- tralia as a result of seeing just such a grave in the Australian desert. Many are the men who have perished of thirst in this waterless waste- land, and their epitaphs usually read ‘Unknown’ or ‘Found with an empty canteen’.” FIRST Motorist: “Funny how Sorkingly has so much petrol. How does he manage it?” Second Motorist: “Well, it’s like this. When he’s out on the road he'll fix his engine so that it won't work, and hang around it until some poor goob in a car drives up and offers to tow him to the nearest garage. When they're approaching the garage, Sorkie will thank the goob, tell him he'll have another go at the engine, does so, and she works.” Congratulations to the Provincial Police With the Compliments of NORTH VAN.
