The annual MacLean’s Magazine University ranking issue has again counted UNBC among the top three small universities in Canada. This will be the fourth year running that UNBC has made the top three in this category. “I’m delighted to know that we have distinguished ourselves and our region by our strong standing in the national ranking of universities by MacLean’s Magazine. We are third #Aagy in the country overall, surpassed only by two much older universities in the Maritimes,” says UNBC president George Iwama. “We are justified in claiming we are Canada’s top small university west of Atlantic Canada.” The MacLean’s rankings are broken down into three categories: primarily undergraduate, comprehen- sive, and medical/doctoral. To deter- mine the rankings Maclean’s consid- ers 14 numerical indicators of the quality of students, libraries, faculty, and finances to rank 49 universities in Canada across these three categories. UNBC is ranked third in the primarily undergraduate category just behind Mount Allison in New Brunswick and Acadia in Nova Scotia. Both of these universities are more than 150 years older than UNBC, and consequently have had a lengthy presence in the Canadian university rankings sys- tems. UNBC is marking out its ter- ritory; however, as this is the fourth year UNBC has trailed these two At- lantic Canadian universities. “Despite our continuing success, we can’t rest on our laurels - and we aren’t,” says Dr. Iwama. “UNBC is UNBC THIRD IN MACLEAN’S RANKINGS Top Three Universities in Canada RG Sak oe ranked first in the country in total re- search funding per faculty member, and just yesterday, students ranked UNBC number one for commitment to the environment in the Globe and Mail’s Canadian University Report. In the comprehensive category Simon Fraser University is ranked first fol- lowed by the University of Victoria and then the University of Waterloo. The comprehensive category is meant rank universities that have a wide range of programs at both the under- graduate and graduate levels, includ- ing professional degrees. In the pri- marily undergraduate category Mount Allison is ranked first for its fifteenth time - which is a record number of wins. UNBC, of course, has ranked third in this category.
