Of this number 365 involved watercraft and 325 were children under the age of 15. In the case of the youngsters nine per cent _ involved watercraft. KKKKKKKEKKK Drownings are the third largest cause of accidental deaths in Canada, after traffic accidents and falls. KRERERARKK Fifty per cent of all boating accidents are caused by capsized boats and 32 per cent from falling ‘overboard. - ~, Most occur in small, unpowered boats, such as canoes. KKKKKKKKKE Alcohol has been found to be a significant contri- buting factor in drownings. Researchers have found that alcohol was associated with 29.3 per cent of all drown- ings. Alcohol was involved in 41.9 per cent of the boating accidents, in 27.9 per cent of all swimming _ drownings, in 17 per cent of falling drownings and in 13 per cent of the miscellaneous drowning accidents. KRKKKKKKKK A startling 84.1 per cent of all drowning victims are males, with the largest number of male drownings occurring in the 15 to 19 age group. KEKKKKKKKK Cottage safety hints include keeping a long pole or other reaching assist near the dock; learning rescue breathing; enrolling children in Red Cross swimming and water safety lessons; and keeping a first aid kit at the cottage.
