After being removed from the invitation only opening event at 7:00 AM attended by the Mayor, City Councilors and others, the protesters unveiled a coffin and staged a mock funeral for the death of small business and community outside the main doors. As_ lined-up customers looked on, short eulogy was read. “Wal-Mart is an attack on small business and workers K Phones from as low as $24.99? Let everyone know what you really want. Von Sychowski also alluded to the fact that much of Wal- Mart’s merchandise comes from sweatshops in the so- called Third World. Wal-Mart is now the world’s largest corporation, having passed Exxon-Mobil for the top slot. The American busi- ness’s profits are larger than the entire GDP of Israel, Greece and Poland combined. However, according to some statistics, despite these enor- mous profit rates, Wal-Mart gives very little back to the communities it is based in. Studies show that for every two jobs created by a Wal- Mart store, the community loses three. Small protests raising awareness about the negative impacts of the store are planned to continue outside the front entrance of the store for the rest of this week.
