hy 10 arts & entertainment October, 4 2011 > Over the Edge THE FINAL CHAPTER: MOCKINGJAY Book Three of The Hunger Games Trilogy DARCE SMITH ARTS EDITOR The concluding novel in The Hunger Games trilogy is Mockingjay. Like the second novel, Catching Fire, it was just a tad less thrilling than the first novel, but still a heart- stopping action-packed adventure book. While it may fall under the classification of teen fiction, there is something refreshing about an easy to read book that literally pulls you through each chapter. Sometimes it is nice to read something light and quick to pull your head away from all of those adult novels designed to make you think and smack your head against a wall. Mockingjay continues with the tale of Katniss and her lead role in her society’s rebellion. She embarks on a personal journey to become the “Mockingjay,” which she unknowingly inspired during her first appearance in the Hunger Games by wearing a pin with a mockingjay on it. She also sets out to personally assassinate President Snow and to have immunity granted for all of the Hunger Games victors. The struggle leads her into the Capitol, where the rebels eventually manage to succeed and return the dysto- pian world back to its order. The novel sees the death of a loved character, and manages to crush the hope that read- ers had in Gale and Katniss ever becoming romantically involved. It ends on a bit ofa sappy note, showing Katniss as an adult in the future, married to Peeta with two chil- dren. She tries to keep her mind occupied from the tragedy she witnessed more than fifteen years earlier by always thinking of the good things. When doing some research for this final piece on The Hunger Games trilogy, I stumbled across mockingjay.net. It contains absolutely everything anyone would ever need to want or know about the series and the upcoming film. This website made me realize the extent of the success this trilogy has had, and that this just might be the next Twlight (hopefully, then it can go away). There are quite a number of people who are completely obsessed with the teen fic- tion novels, and hopefully by the time the film is released the hype surrounding it will have paid off. As a side note — as I explored the website and clicked on “Forums,” I learned that somehow I have been permanently banned from the board without ever having been there before. . .
