Page 10 Cassiar Courier March 1988 SESSHSSSSSSOSGSOSSSHSVSVS60000S9S9999SSSSS6 “Sunday, February 7th was an exciting day at the Cassiar Arena, as thirteen young hockey players travelled from Iskut to play two hockey games against the Cassiar Novice teams. Although the scoresheets showed Cassiar as the stronger team, the players from Iskut must be commended for their excellent sports- manship and enthusiasm. We understand these were-the first “real games’’ for the Iskut young- sters, and with a few weeks more practice they should be able to put on a real show at the tournament here in March. It was also great to see so many parents and fans make the long trip from Iskut to cheer on these youngsters. This mini-tournament also saw some “firsts'' for Cassiar players . . . Goalie Andrew Johnston had his first shutout; Christopher Woodrow and Jeffery Johnston had their first goals; and Christopher Whalen got his first points with two assists. The scoring summary was as follows: CASSIAR 5 - ISKUT 1 The second game, Cassiar switched off the majority of players and mostly first year players hit the ice. Iskut came on strongly but their legs were a little tired playing games back-to-back. Richard Louie managed the one goal for Iskut while Cassiar scorers were Ken Smith with 2 goals, David Hardy and Jody Harrison with a goal and an assist each; and Jeffery Johnston with a goal. Most Valuable Player trophies were award- ed to Iskut goalie, Robert Dennis who turned away many Cassiar shots and made some great saves in net. Cassiar’s Jody Harrison and Iskut’s — Harold Dennis were also named M.V.P.’s. Most Sportsmanlike awards were presented to Ken Smith and David Hardy of Cassiar and to Shawn Dennis of Iskut. CASSIAR 8 - ISKUT 0 This first game was one-sided as Iskut got the feel of the ice, and got used to hearing their names called from their fans at the boards. Christopher Woodrow led the scoring with 2 goals and an assist. Other points were made by Aaron Tripp and Ricky Howard with 1 goal’ and 1 assist; Jody Harrison with 2 goals; Brent Babiuk and Myles Carlick with 1 goal each; and Christopher Whalen with 2 assists and Ken Smith with 1 assist. cc5vrcsrccvrrrccrsrcrecrcrcrcrecrecrcecec ee eo i eecesvecccceoeoeccsvscsoseerawresrececrrrrcrcrrcrrecerrrerrerrcececeerecerererre rere eee ee ee oe DP>PADA 8222S NISV]POHOOHOIDAOIAIPOPAPSYBHSLALSASAARAAAASALAASALLSA238062C86 SSoOoOoOoCOoOoCoCOC CCG BAAOOOOOOOOOOOCOOOOCOCOOC OOOO OOO COCO COCO COO OOOO OOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OC OOOO OOO ae PEE WEES Porti- took the Pee Wee team to White- horse the first weekend in February. SENIOR HOCKEY ce by Eck Trask The Cassiar Old Timers played in a tourna- ment in Watson Lake February 12 - 14th. The team played very well but were disappointed losers in an overtime semi-final game, 2-1, vs. Whitehorse. Cassiar had numerous opportuni- ties to salt away the game but were not able to finish the plays. Whitehorse had been beaten in a game played earlier between the two teams by a score of 5-0. The Erickson Minors have been involved in two exciting games recently which both ended in 8-8 draws. The Blues held on to tie their game after leading 8-3. This is the second time that the Minors have made a great come from behind effort. Hopefully the Blues can get it right next time, eh guys? On Tuesday February 16th the gritty Good Hope Lake Warriors battled to earn a point by dead locking the Minors in an up and down the ice affair. On behalf of the executive and players, the league extends its concern for Skip Mel- ynchuk and his family during the difficult time of their mother’s illness.
