30 Paciric Great Eastern Rarmway BEtt. frost. I believe this country more suitable for dairy-farming and hog- raising than anything else. There is splendid peavine range for stock and no difficulty in raising winter feed. The climate is cold and dry in winter, with long spells of clear sunny days. Horses can be wintered out on the range and shelter for range cattle is not re- quired. I certainly believe that con- tentment is more universal here than in many places, and ultimate inde- pendence is in store for consistent workers.” Mr. F. J. Jow- sey, of Bridge Lake Settlement, midway between 70-Mile House, Cariboo, and the North Thompson River at Mount Olie, is equally enthusiastic over the “lake country,” as evidenced by some recent comments :— POTATOES IN THE PACIFIC GREAT EASTERN COUNTRY. Where the Sun Shines nearly every Day in the Year. “ Bridge Lake until a short time ago was regarded solely as a stock- raising district, the settlers being located on the meadows and not interested in cultivations to any extent. With the advent of new settlers, however, many found the uplands well adapted for tame grasses, with timothy as chief favourite, though clovers, alfalfa, brome, etc., are being experimented with. Most farm roots do well and grain-growing for home use is past the experimental stage. Oats and barley in some cases attained a height of 4 to 5 feet this year, the grain being plump and well matured. Every farm appears to have some nook or corner with garden sheltered from summer frost. Summer range second to none in the Province is unlimited. Dairying should be the big industry of the future. The climate is ideal, the sun shining practically every day in the year, making it a paradise for hunters, campers, and fishermen, who find sport to their heart’s content. The mountain, woodland, and water scenery is magnificent, and from one point in the vicinity at least forty lakes are visible to the naked eye. Bridge Lake itself holds twenty-eight islands of various sizes. There is a good school, community hall, post-office and store, and a local branch of the United Farmers of British Columbia, with monthly meetings. Roads are receiving attention and telephone communication to link. up the Cariboo and North Thompson District is under consideration. Bridge Lake is a good place to live.”
