Make your mark—get involved! your involvement in this event. At this meeting, the Student Society that represents you will Sex 7 (Now that we have your attention) As usual,I have sooooo much Student Society stuff to talk about and for the few people who actually come in to talk about whatever when I’m in the office, I apologize for my stressed out ranting and raving. This applies to my fellow directors also. We at NUGSS (Northern Undergraduate Student © ‘Society) have taken on some tough issues towards long-term student life here at UNBC, to name a few: trying to accommodate clubs in non- existent office space, asking for a true student union building from administration, internal restructuring of our (Board of Directors) positions, and generally just trying to get some direction forward. There has been a lot of board meetings which usually try and tackle issues that we just can’t deal with, either because we don’t have the “authority”, people don’t know what they’re arguing about, there may be some finger pointing and bickering among us and others, and sometimes even we’re just plain stumped. My personal belief is that this University is strained to meet the expectations and demands from such a broad student body, with a space size of a large high school. I have read some comments written on our suggestion sheets and some really are disheartening. If something is getting your underwear in a knot, then why not talk to us? Now more than ever, we are in a time of need for your helpful ideas. Before I go into detail about NUGSS, and changes that will affect you, I would like to say a bit about the “Planning For Growth” - A document that was released by the President (Dr. Jago), and the planning committee. Topics that concern student life the most - are expansion of the library, expansion of the lab building, the conference center, government cutbacks and of course the infamous new gym and SUB building. If you read this document you will notice that no specific dates for any of these projects re mentioned, nor where any of the money will come from for these projects. I strongly recommend that you read this document if you are interested in the future of this University and its programs. The lowdown popcorn for the future of this University reads this - straight from a meeting I had with Dr.Jago and the Grad Student Society: As a new University UNBC receives a 35% “bonus” Northern Allowance, on top of the Provincial Funding received from the Government. When this University reaches 2500 FTE (Full-Time Equivalents) for at least two years, it is understood by all parties that UNBC will lose the Northern Allowance. If this happens, Dr. Jago made it clear that this will be a very different University. If this concerns you, it probably should. Also in this report it is stated that the University will expand programs where needed (ie.demand), money talks you know, no matter how Politically Correct we all try and be. The University would like at least 3500 FTE enrollment for the academic year of 2001-2002. So maybe you might be inclined to write Colin Kingsley (your Mayor), or better yet Victoria and let .them know how you feel with the freeze on government spending. Lastly, the existing four faculties will now be combined into two faculties: 1) Arts/Social Science 2) Science, this may overwork cont'd on page 9
