Government but, once again, an ap- plication is being made for assistance with the re- novations to the roof at the Arena, and a com- plete exterior paint job. The total estimated cost, for the project is $100,000.00, with the Govern- ment helping one third of the cost. Various ex- cuses by the Government pertaining to the Com- munity Club’s status in British Columbia, have been used for not granting us these monies. How- ever, we are hoping that they will reconsider and provide us with the monies. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GRANT The Community Club has applied for a Commun- ity Development Grant for the 1980-81 year, which will enable us to hire three fulltime people. one for the ski hill operation, a youth co-ordin- ator for the Youth Centre, and an Arts and Crafts co-ordinator for the Aurora Arts and Crafts Cen- tre (this will be in liason with the Arts and Crafts Society). The total cost to the Community Club for the one year period is approximately $2800, as assistance has to be given to offset the monies coming from this grant. At the present time, the Club is responsible for a fulltime employee for the ski hill operation, and with this grant it would be a much cheaper way of giving more to recre- ation in Cassiar. VANDALISM The Cassiar Community Club has had a lot of van- dalism over the past year and a concern has been raised about it. Areas like the lounge, snack bar, arena, rec centre and theatre have been marred due to somebody ‘not appreciating the facilities. Considerable expense is used to keep these facil- ities up to standard and it becomes very alarming, — and raises a question as to whether or not we really should keep up our facilities for the public use. Adults, as well as youth, are the culprits, and hopefully those responsible will read this little blurb and think before they smash. LOUNGE NEWS -The month of October, as well as the month of November, will show some decor changes in the Lounge. New curtains, indirect lighting, stage re- pairs, new decor, and better security, will ensure a better atmosphere for the patrons who frequent the Lounge. Further plans for the lounge will be a proper bar setup, a sound system, and refurbish- ing of the bathrooms in the coming year. MEMBERSHIPS Members of the Community Club are increasing each year, and records are kept in the various facil- ities with regards to the names and addresses of the members. A computer print out of commun- ity club members is given out each week and files are updated to keep these intact. However, some- times a name gets misplaced, or a member termin- ates, or a person becomes a new member, and re- cords don’t show that they are one or the other. To ensure that you are a member of the Club, please check with the Recreation Office Master file, and if you haven't received your card, please ask to have one. ale lf the person who has registered in the umbrella club is not a member of the Cassiar Community Club they are then notified to either pay double for the umbrella membership or join the Com- munity Club. Areas such as the regular daily ad- missions to the various Club facilities do a spot check with regards to whether they are a CCC member or not. However, this area will be check- ed up more in the near future. YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE CASSIAR COMMUNITY CLUB TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY EVENTS IN ANY OF THE FACILITIES OF THE CLUB (ex-: ceptions are fraternal organizations). PLEASE CO-OPERATE IF YOU ARE ASKED FOR EITHER A CARD OR IF YOU ARE A MEM- BER . oS Country members are on the increase with the areas such as Erickson Gold Mines, Plaza Re- sources, etc. now becoming new members of the Club. Areas such as the Lounge and Theatre are checked for members, and people who wish to join other umbrella Clubs of the main Club, pay their membership on a duplicate receipt, which is forwarded to the Recreation Office, and checked against the master file. It doesn't make sense that one person “should have to pay while another doesn’t! ANYBODY FOR HELICOPTER SKIING? A package for Cassiar residents is being put together for the coming winter season, and hopefully the package will be available for three weekends over the season. We need 30 participants to materialize -this adventure. CASSIAR INVITATIONAL BADMINTON TOURNAMENT The Cassiar Invitational Badminton Tournament was held on October II and 12. SKI CLUB NEWS The Cassiar Ski Hill, under the direction of the Cassiar Community Club, will commence oper- ations upon the arrival of ample snow for the hill. The Club is pleased to announce that Ms. Debbie Mackie will be the new pro for the hill, and a full schedule will be available upon the opening. Deb- bie will be providing private ski lessons, as well as overseeing the operations. ‘ The Community Club is presently negotiating with Skyline Sports of Vancouver for a complete 1980. This will enable people wishing to have new skis, or to add to their equipment, an opportunity to speak with the professionals that are coming in for that particular weekend. Skis will be mount- ed, also there will be ski apparel and various ac- cessories. Watch for posters. A ski meeting wil: be held for all skiers interested in helping with the operation, in the near future. Watch your Community Club Calendar. ROCKe A general minor Hockey Meeting was _ held October 13th in the Arena Lounge. The purpose of the meeting was to elect another 2 members for the Minor Hockey Committee to help out with special projects during the 1980-81 season. Thirty Pups players joined Cassiar Minor Hockey team this year and due to the amount of players, the executive felt that a supervising parent during the practices was required in case of emergency. For Mrs. Baerwald. has been appointed Pups team cordinator, and she will schedule parent super- vising duty according to availability of individuals. With the local tournaments coming up, more help is needed to schedule billeting, and organization of events. For this purpose, Mrs. |. Walters has been appointed Public Relations person. The Minor Hockey schedule is as follows: PUPS Mon., Wed. and Fri.............. from 5:30 to 6:30 After the lessons are completed, curling will start in full swing. 1situ0d a6iz2es0 .O8C1 asdasvoti. 91. eset Cassiar counter November 1980, Page 17 GOSS COUNT SISHUNGES \ i Ss Ne *. ene xt ~ 5 Ni Re Sai aN Any persons interested in cross country skiing this winter may be interested to know that a superb trail has been cut up the valley behind the ski hill. eee of the asthines causes iioeals which make for difficult skiing. This will: make the trail ideal for family outings. This trail is reserved for cross country skiing only and all snowmobilers are asked not to use it. The Cassiar Curling Club The opening curling social of the year was a huge success. We were happy to see so many new curlers out on the ice, and such a large enthusiastic crowd. We were especially pleased to welcome the people from Plaza, Erickson’s and the other mines in the surrounding area. We even had an Arabian stallion wander in, which we think belonged to the mysterious Arab. The sinister sheik attempted to abduct one of our ravishing members, but Mel convinced him that she was already taken. The first rock to start off the curling season was thrown by. Frank Nitti, followed by the mini-bonspiel. I’m sure the games confused even the best of curlers, but they were enjoyed by all.
