Strip Aerobics: Dancing into fitness? If culture is driven by the latest trends, then what does the idea of strip aero- bics, a controversial exercise adopting movements from exotic dancers, Say hg our culture? Strip aerobics was first introduced at a gym in L.A. about five years ago, and since then has been popping up all around the world, from far.corners of Europe, to right here in Canada. As you can imagine, classes involve various movements which one might see in a local strip joint, but many question arise as to whether this so-called exercise, commonly referred to as “sexercise,” has a place in fitness clubs. While Cosmopolitan and Oprah’s magazine has each reportedly condoned this. new fitness routine, most clubs jump on the confidence-building aspect in order to get perspective participants. They claim that mastering the movements will not only allow clients to tone muscles and lose weight, but also to build confidence and self-esteem when they see how “sexy” they can be. However, it is hard to see how “sexy” and “working out” can be related. Sure, it is an alternative to the usual monotony of endless cardio and weight machines, and dancing can be fun, but is this just another temporary trend invented by the health club gurus to lure more people into the realm of ultimate fitness? Temporary or not, strip aerobics are on the rise. While many critics say that it definitely will not take over the “usual” methods of fitness classes, many people show interest.
