March 9, 1999 SoUNnNnNbDScCcA ) Over The Edge Page 7 The Divine open for the Hip by Michelle Dubuc It is here. The day Prince George has been awaiting for eons has finally arrived. Tonight the Tragically Hip will take the stage at PG's very own Multiplex. Seems too good to be true doesn't it? Well it gets better, because the opening act - By Divine Right - is one of Canadas best kept secrets. The band, made up of lead singer and _ guitarist Jose Contreras, drum- mer Mark Goldstein, bass player Brendan Canning and Brendann Mcguire on rhythm gui- tar, is coming to Prince George with an excel- lent new album to showcase and a lot of talent on their hands. The bands most recent release "Bless This Mess" was released on February 23, and the first single, "Come For a Ride", has been in rotation on Muchmusic for about 3 weeks now. "Things are still unfold- ing for us right now, ," says Mark Goldstein, "We feel things are going exactly the way they need to go." They most certainly are, with Canada's most influen- cial band so taken with their style they asked them to come on one of the most anticipated tours of the year. "Touring with the Hip has been a complete education-we've never experienced arena rock before. And there are no rock star aitti- tudes, the Hip are very humble, centred indi- viduals and its like touring with one giant family. Its our favorite tour by far." With influ- ences as diverse as Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen, Billie Holiday, and Sid Bereit, Divine Right has formulated a sound _ difficult to describe. "Jose used to describe our sound as 'loud and beautiful'," says Mark Goldstein, "put I'm not sure that applys to this record. Some of the songs are more subtle than that." For the most part BDR has a very positive out- look in their music - Spring Break Rugby Tour By Jeremy Fung. During the last few days of spring break the UNBC Rugby Football Club was in Kelowna. The team arrived Thursday evening for a night of relaxation (read drunken revelry). Friday was a full day for the club, first they had meet- ings with Okanagan University College to set up the Interior Collegiate League, after that they had their first practice of the year on grass. At home they can only practice inside gyms. Saturday was the first of two games against the Kelowna Bonobos (biol- ogy time... Bonobos are the only mammal other than humans who have The Women’s rugby team pauses for a group photo in Kelowna. -Submitted photo sex for pleasure). Apparently UNBC was a little rusty on Saturday, and the rain caused their ball handling skills to be less than brilliant. The men lost 22-3 and the women fost = 17-5. Sunday was much bet- ter, however, both teams still lost, the results were 24-12 for the men and 20-12 for the women, Devon Atkinson and Rich Rudolph scored for the men. Unfortunately two of UNBC's players were injured. Jamie Ker and Bill Carpenter are both out of commission for a while. On the bright side they both claim that it was a great weekend and that the games were good exhibition match- es. Ball handling can only improve as_ the snow goes away (yeah right, maybe in two months) and the team can practice outside. On March 20th the team will travel to UVIC to play those looking for angst- ful musings will not find them here. Strange, considering BDR opened for Days of the New last year for three weeks. "We were sur- prised at the response we got. We nicknamed it our 'thick-skinned tour’ because our friends were like, ‘what are you doing?' But we saw it as an opportuni- ty to reach a new audi- ence." By Divine Right has what you could call an intensely spiritual side as well. During the recording process at Bath studios Jumper Brett Seiler, number 8, reaches for the sky, and the ball, during one of the rugby games that the UNBC Rugby team played in Kelowna in a memorial game. UVIC has one of the best under 20 teams in North America so it will be a great experience for our team. In the third weekend of April the team will travel to Jasper to play in a 7's tournament. Last year they won the bow! divi- sion, they hope to defend their accomplish- ment this year. -Photo Submitted The rugby team is also working on its 2nd annu- al pub crawl so keep your eyes peeled for this event.
