Dent-Proof Cars

THERE WAS A TIME when an
automobile fender was a thing apart.
If, through the driver’s bad luck or
carelessness, the projecting mudguard
was crumpled or torn, it could be un-
bolted and replaced or repaired for a
few dollars.

The modern fender is a thing of
beauty; when it ends and the body
proper begins is difficult to define.
The dismayed motorist of today, look-
ing down at his mutilated fender, is
looking at a major repair job. But the
day may be near when 75 cents or a
dollar will be enough to straighten
things out.

An automobile with a plastic body,
dentproof, rustproof and_ stronger
than steel, was displayed in Phila-
delphia recently. The body is moulded
in one piece of polyester plastic sand-
wiched with glass fibre and it has been
given some pretty stiff tests.

A bump which would give an ordi-
nary car a crumpled fender leaves the
plastic car unscathed. The two-inch
thick plastic simply springs back into

its proper contours. The car is not
indestructable though. In one test it
was driven against a tree trunk at 25
miles an hour and the result was a
14-inch crack (in the car). But with a
little glass fibre and plastic the repair-
men had it patched up as good as new
in one hour.

It may be a bit early yet for
motorists to start placing orders for
plastic cars but the possibilities are
pleasant to contemplate. Among them
are cheaper cars, fewer and lighter
repair bills, reduced insurance rates
and the ability to take a nudge in the
fender with tranquility. x%& >
