10 Opinions September 16, 2009 + Over the Edge Halloween 2- Cinematic Poop MEL FARROW CONTRIBUTOR The lights dim in the theatre as the movie starts, the air rife with anticipation. The long awaited Halloween 2 comes on the screen; however, the eerie theme that usually permeates the movie is nowhere to be heard. “Great,” I think,’ Zombie has again messed up a slasher classic.” Michael returns to the unfortunate town of Haddonfield, only to be killed by a young woman after a long night of blood and gore, landing her in the hospi- tal. As usual, Rob Zombie used excessive amounts of gore and swearing that did not do the movie justice in the fact that it was completely unnecessary to the film. The girl, whose name we discover is Lau- rie, begins to have violent dreams about Myers escaping and killing all those close to her, and these dreams almost become prophetic in the fact that Michael does een. Led by visions of his dead mother, promising “You'll be home soon, Mi- chael” and encouraging him to kill, this twist in Zombie's latest movie was again unnecessary. The role was created solely so Zombie's daughter, Sheri Moon Zom- bie, could have a part. Laurie is of course Michael’s long lost sister and he intends to have a family reunion she will never forget. I would say this film is cinematic poop; Zombie should stick to music instead of trying to create or recreate movies. I went to this movie, hoping that Zombie would create something a little better the Hal- loween (2007) however, I was bitterly disappointed. Like the first one, there were explanations where there didnt need to be, roles that shouldn't have been included, and violence just for the sake of violence. I would not recommend wast- ing money or time seeing this piece of cinematic poop, indeed escape and once again, return to Haddonfield, right on time for Hallow- Letters to the Editor I spent five, very active, years at UNBC (Convicted in 2008), During my tenure as a full time undergrad at UNBC I was an avid reader of Over The Edge. Despite my unvaried reading of what was deemed an independent student news source, I was never impressed, and was deeply disturbed by some of the disdain that seemed to go into the creation of UNBC'’s free press. I was witness to a slippery slope of a paper that did not accept the responsibility that came with publishing a free press. I was very vocal about my dislike for the paper, and it's ignorance of the important issues the students were facing at UNBC. My vocality of disappointment in the student paper came to a pinnacle during my short term as NUGSS president - during which some may say I was a little rogue from the typical NUGSS board member, and may I say I take great pride in such a compliment ;). It was very well known that I did not approve of the abuse of freedom that was exhibited by what had become, in my opinion, a tabloid. Over this past year, a close friend of mine has constantly brought me issues of the paper for me to read, I have been impressed more and more by each issue this year: Arts, Sexual- ity, Student Politics, federal and provincial politics, performance reviews, and sports have all represented in such a way that relevant, unbiased, and entertaining, The most recent issue, particularly an article regarding the recent firing and hiring of the student pub manager has inspired this communique. I am utterly dumbstruck with the absolute turn around that the 2008/2009 Over the Edge staff has accomplished - There a absolute lack of disdain for the arts, OTE is exhibiting a strong voice for the student body of UNBC (filling in for the lackluster performance of the UNBC Student Union), important student issues are fearless commented on and published without concern of social backlash, but most importantly the responsibility that comes with publishing a free news source has been more than recognized by each and every one of you, it has been embraced and exhibited with each article published. Please do not remove yourself from OTE as you graduate, even if you must perform the duty remotely, remain as mentors to your new OTE staff. All the best, and thank you so much for making me proud of the UNBC student newspaper. Liam K.
