Of course we all know that this “mistaken for a deer” alibi has caused a rash of bright garments in the bush. But according to Stevie, these aren't always protective. A man at Duncan a few months ago, wearing a red shirt and a red cap, had the cap neatly ripped off his head by a stray slug. Protective Coloring Some hunters, believe it or not, are rejecting the bright protective color- ing—they say they’d rather remain in- conspicuous in the bush! Others feel that a change from red to orange would be more distinctive. Back on the U.S. Atlantic coast (where there are a million hunters to our one) the general practice is to leave your kill where it is until dark, then pack it out with plenty of lights and noise. Otherwise you are running a gaunt- let of slugs from all directions. A few years ago a young fellow at Pitt Meadows was packing out a deer when he was fired on. The bullet went through the deer’s neck and lodged in the boy’s spine. He lived, but was hospitalized for months. The bullet was slowed up just enough to avoid severing the hunter’s spine. Talking details over with Steven- son, it seemed to me that something could be done by way of education and instructions. But here I struck another interest- ing statistic: Only about 12 or 15 per cent of the licensed hunters are members of a fish and game club. What a field of endeavor this opens up. Membership drives in all direc- tions seem to be indicated. Gun Clubs Can Help In the case of carelessly handled weapons the gun clubs could do in- valuable work. Proper instruction in the handling of firearms would cer- tainly cut the accident rate. For every hunter should be absolutely familiar with his gun. And when I say familiar, I don’t mean just be able to load it. Who hasn’t heard the crack “Hey, Joe, how do you work this thing?” when somebody has borrowed a gun for a day’s hunting. Imagine borrow- ing a car and driving down the street trying to figure out where the brake pedal is! EVANS, COLEMAN & JOHNSON BROS. LTD. DEALERS IN BUILDING SUPPLIES Telephone: Office B 3105 900 WHARF ST. VICTORIA In the accidents attributable to faulty weapons, old shotguns seem to be the chief offenders—old chea hammer guns are dynamite. And there are the guns with a good job of home gunsmithing, nails fashioned into firing pins, stocks repaired with friction tape. “It'll do until we get a new one.” Nuts. You might be dead before that. And remember this—no gun is safe because it has a safety. You doubt it? O.K. In most double barrelled and pump guns, the safety only locks the trigger. The sear and the notch can still jolt apart and let the striker do its job. There are some exceptions to the rule, but very few. The Mauser action on rifles is positive and absolutely safe. And most of the expensive Eng- lish shotguns and rifles have a positive safety. Take weapons like those turned out by Holland & Holland, Purdy, Boss and Woodward—here the striker mechanism is positively locked. But you won't find many of these guns in the B.C. bush. Take it to Your Gunsmith But take the good old “thutty thutty.” Is your’s getting along in years? Just get it out of the attic. Of course being a thoroughly ex- perienced hunter it won’t be loaded— but just work that lever once to make Saunders & Hitchman Service Station B.A. GAS AND OILS PERSONALIZED SERVICE B 4594 2554 Cadboro Bay Rd.
