Over The Edge Page 6 SOUNDSCAPE January 26, 1999 Baywatch Various Sony From a TV series dominated by stereotypes comes a CD of stereotyp- ical music for your stereo at home. If a California beach party is what your looking for, then this disc might just be a worthwhile investment for you. Featuring top forty tunes which we have all heard millions of time at bars across the land, the disc does carry a fast, fun loving beat to it, courtesy of such artists as Will Smith (Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It), DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Summertime), OMC (How Bizarre), and Diana King (Shy Guy). A nice calypso beat can be found in Wyclef Jean's: Guantanamara, and The Blackout All Stars: | Like It (Like That). Honestly, this is a fun CD. It is a soundtrack which is based on the type of music which is found playing in the background on the TV series. If | were to use my top secret TV trans- porter(Which | have hastily construct- ed from an overturned refrigerator [= box and a felt pen) to send myself into the world of Baywatch, the CD depicts precisely the type of music which | would expect to be playing incessantly wherever I go. © A word of warning: the key to listen- ing to this CD is to program all of the songs into your changer and pur- posely omit the last track unless you enjoy the hideous pleasure of listen- ing to David Hasslehoff belting out “Current of Love” at the top of his lungs. The transporter doesn’t seem to be working as planned... DJ Nabs In The Lab with DJ Nabs Columbia / Sony Oh yeah...memories...this is old school. Record scratching, lots of bass, rap, a progressive beat. Take me back to the days of Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock and Kool Moe Dee. Add ‘some vintage Run DMC and you're almost there. The thing about DJ Nabs which draws him away from true Old School is that.he is also a master of modern mixing, often accomplishing the same. is a review Gate ancompecsina hi music ai st many eevee Features. will include reviews of artists, live venues, recordings and upcoming releases with a focus on Canadian and local artists when it is viable. The crucial difference is that you will find a heavier beat to Nabs’ bites, not to mention the rap style - which truly is Old School in most cases. You will also find that the majority of each of his songs features a guest artist doing the rapping, with DJ Nabs taking care of...well...DJ’ing - big surprise. In his composition “Time”, Nabs takes the chorus of Cyndi Laupers’ “Time after Time” and puts his own unique twist on it. It’s never going to sound the same again. However, you do have to wonder about an artist who is content to write a song titled “I Ain't No Joke”, with the soul purpose of trying to convince the world that he is the one, only and best rapper in the universe. ' A track worth mentioning is the acapella of “We Trying to Stay Alive”, featuring Wyclef Jean. It’s not com- mon to hear rap acapella anymore, especially from such a well renowned artist. It’s a treat to hear Wycleff sing, with a great DJ mixing behind him too. If you enjoy rap DJ’s and would like to listen to a live set, then check out this CD. The best read on cam- pus.
