ing his dog one day on the trail, was passing
through a dense willow thicket near the
barracks when he noticed his wrist watch
was missing. He had an idea it might be
in a particular patch of willow several
hundred yards in diameter. He retraced his
steps as well as he could and made a search.
Unsuccessful, he got several other men to
put their dogs in, but without result.
Sixteen days later, after the search had been
abandoned, Const. Hacking (Tabor, Al-
berta) happened to be in the vicinity and
thought he would try his luck with his dog
Smokey. He sent the dog in to search the
thicket, and within a few minutes the dog
returned and proudly presented his master
with the missing watch! Lying in the bush
for 16 days in all types of weather, the
leather strap of the watch had held enough
human scent for Smokey to locate it.
Searching for illicit stills (dubbed “brew
work” by the Mounties) is simply a varia-
tion of the free search. At the word of
command the dog free searches for anything
with the scent of alcohol. Dogs are used
.extensively in this assignment under the
Excise Act, and they more than pay for
their keep by fines collected. Just toward
the end of the course police dog Peter Pan
and his master, Const. Wilfred Cobble
(Vegreville, Alberta) were detailed to assist
Detectives Robson and Smith of the Excise
detail in searching a portion of the Fraser
Valley. For some time the officers had been
aware of a still somewhere in the heavy
timber near Haney but had never been able
to locate it. Taken to the scene the dog
