' Continued... Cassiar acted as host company for this occasion. The problem presented to all eight competing* teams was sort of a double-header problem. Briefly, it involved a vehicle which had been swept off a road and over a steep embankment by a snow slide. The object was to rescue the man who was trapped in the cab. On reaching the wrecked vehicle, the team found the man had a broken leg plus other injuries. He was conscious and asked about his buddy who had been with him. As there was no sign of the "buddy", it was ; rightly assumed that he had been thrown out of the cab .and was buried somewhere in the snow slide. To condense the narrative, ‘the injured man in the vehicle was given first aid, the missing man was located by probing in the snow ‘slide and they were both removed up the bank to'safety. As can be expected ina first competition, errors and omissions were made by all the teams, but the Cassiar team was the best organized and made the fewest errors and so became Canada's. first winners of an Open Pit Mine Rescue Competition. So I ; rigged up a beam with a pulley at the top of the building and hoisted up a couple of | barrels of bricks. "When I fixed the building; there was a lot of bricks left over. I hoisted the barrel back up again and Secured the line at the bottom, and then went up again and filled the barrel With the extra bricks. Then I went down to the bottom and cast off the line. "Unfortunately, the barrel of bricks was heavier than I was and before I knew what was happening the barrel started down, jerking me off the ground. I decided to WY hang on and half-way up I met the barrel coming down and received a severe blow on the shoulder, "J then continued to the top, banging my head against the beam and getting my fingers jammed in the pulley. When the barrel hit the ground it bursted its bottom, allowing all the bricks to spill out. I was now heavier than. the barrel and so started Gown again at high speed. "Halfway down I met the barrel coming up, and- recéived severe injuries to my shins. When I hit the ground, I landed on the bricks, getting several painful cuts from the sharp edges. ; "At this point I must have lost my presence of mind because I let go of the line. The barrel then came down Siving me another heavy blow on the head and putting me in the hospital. I respect- fully request sick leave," Va¥aYavaavavavaVavavar a aVavavavavevaravavavatavatavavavavavavavavavavatavata’
