Well here we are in the month on the sight- ings of Ben Affleck. The Oscar winner himself is here in our little corner of the world, having (been dragged, er) come to Prince George to shoot his latest film. Having been on the web | can honestly say | am not his BIGGEST fan, | just don't have the time it takes to be that obsessed. Oh sure I'd like to, but who would- n't? Ah well back to the real world. Aside from his obvi- ous physical attributes, ok, lamens terms, he's a hottie, | respect Ben Affleck as an actor and a writer. | have followed What Celebrity would you most like to talk to and why? This is slowly turning into an ode to Ben. Ok, back to topic. With movie stars in town my thoughts turn to celebrities. Not all celebrities reside in la la land, but the ones that do come to mind at the mention of the term. There are many people within hollywood that | think | could learn alot from. DSCAPE By Divine Right By Michelle Dubuc Well folks, it's finally here. The day Prince George has been sali- vating about for months has arrived. Tonight those of us _ lucky enough to possess tick- ets will witness the leg- endary Tragically Hip take the stage at PG's very own Multiplex. Seems too good to be true doesn't it? Well it gets better, because the opening act - By Divine Right - is one Of spe eee Canada's best kept secrets. T he band, made up of lead singer and gui- tarist! Jose Cont reras, drummer Goldstein, bass player Brendan Canning and Brenndan McGuire. on rhythm guitar, is coming to Prince George with an excellent new album to showcase and a lot of talent on their hands. The bands most recent release "Bless This Mess" was released on February 23, and the first single, "Come Fora Ride", has been in rota- tion on Muchmusic for about 3 weeks. "Things are still unfolding for us right now," says Mark Goldstein, "We feel things are going exactly the way they need to go." They most certain- ly are, with Canada's most influential band so taken with their style they asked them to come on one of the most anticipated tours of the year. "Touring with the Hip has been a complete education- we've never experi- enced arena rock before. There are no rock star attitudes; the Hip are very humble, centred individuals. It's Mark a like touring with one giant family. It's our favourite tour by far." With influences as diverse as Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen, Billie Holiday, and Sid Berett, Divine Right has formu- lated a sound difficult to describe. "Jose used to describe our sound as Youd and beautiful'," says Mark Goldstein, "but I'm not sure that apples to this record. Some of the songs are more subtle than that." For the most part BDR has a very positive out- look in their music - those looking for angst- ful musings will not find them here. Strange, considering BDR opened for Days of the New last year for three weeks. "We were sur- prised at the response we got. We nicknamed it our 'thick-skinned tour' because our friends were like, ‘what are you doing?’ But we saw it as an opportunity to reach a new audience." Indeed, these days BDR is reaching all kinds of new audiences, and apparently that even includes the supernatural! During the last night of record- ing at Bathouse Studio near Kingston, the band was surprised to find a dead rabbit curled up next to the bass amp. Apparently Jose could see a "J" somehow in his fur patterns. "Jose was really freaked out when he first saw that Over The Edge Page 13 March 23, 1999 | | rabbit," laughs Goldstein, "but really | think it was a wonderful symbol of rebirth." Rebirth could be an understatement for what BDR are experi- encing right now. Their last show in Prince George two years ago had them opening for hHead at a tiny ski- lodge south of town, tonight they play to a sold out crowd at the Multiplex. They are also hop- ing to release "Bless This Mess" stateside. "We're heading down there in for a 3 week tour. Releasing the album in the states is not something we want to rush into; we've had offers before and turned them down. It's a work in progress right now." When it all comes down to it, the guys are really just having fun. "Yesterday we got to play hockey with Lanny McDonald!" exclaimed Goldstein from a pay- phone at Calgary's Saddledome. Their style both musically and per- sonally is easy-going and cheerful. Even their touring must haves are few and simple: a good red wine, lots of water, some chips and salsa, and a comfy sofa on which to unwind. By Divine Right simply loves to play music, great music, and that enthusiasm comes through at every level. So to those of you who were going to skip out on the opening act tonight? Don't.
