Over The Edge Page 6 SOUNDSCAPE April 1, 1998 Black Grape Stupid, Stupid, Stupid (Radioactive/Universal)For a guy who stole beer and sold them to street drunks for money at 13, and who aspired to make porno films in Amsterdam during high school, Shaun Ryder of Black Grape made it about as close as he could to fulfilling his dream. He started a rock band. Ryders original band, The Happy Mondays, made it big in England but just could- n't keep up the good work so in 1995, Ryder came back again with a vengeance, sporting Black Grape. Their debut “/t’s Great When You're Straight...Yeah” (Radioactive) entered the UK charts at none other than number one, winning several awards. Upon the release of Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Black Grape found their fans gulp- ing to get their noisy CD’s into players around the world. When they decided to do a tour in America, they ran into problems acquiring Visas, due to the fairly extensive rap sheets credited to them by Britain. They beat the system by meeting with press in Cuba, and then moved onto Mexico. America couldn’t hold out any longer. They stormed the walls and crazed their fans at concerts across the nation including LA, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Right now, you will be able to find them tour- ing Japan but hold your breath and they might come to visit us. The first thing that you notice when you. are lis- tening to the tunes of Black Grape is that their tunes are full-bodied, filled with sonic candy for your ears. With great rocketing vocals and the likes of Ged Lynch (Drums), Wags (Guitar), and Martin Slattery (Keyboards, Sax), | am sure that you will find Stupid, Stupid, Stupid to be a not-so-stupid addition to your CD collection in the face of contemporary rock with a id ee cool grooves. Ryder, and Black Grape may be a bit crazy, but then again, great rock has to have that crazy element! Ol Skool Ol Skool (Universal) This group of musical smoothies is worthy of their title. Utilizing the tight ° harmonies and strong vocals typical of bands from the 60’s and 70’s, Of Skool biends them with the ruggedness and aggressiveness’ of today’s best R&B groups, while still maintaining their silky edge. Members Bobby, Tony, Curtis and Pookie all grew up knowing each other but didn’t really hang out much together until one fate- ful night when they all got. together and decided to put together a demo. Less them a month after completing the demo, they found themselves making a cramped road trip to Atlanta to meet with multi- platinum recording artist, and owner of Keia entertainment, Keith Sweat.
