GEORGE MYERS, charged with driving while <im-
paired, will appear on October 9, 1986 in Cassiar to fix
a date for his trial.

GEORGE DENNIS pled guilty to a charge of assault
He received a one-year suspended sentence.

RICHARD KNOWLES pled guilty to a charge of
unlawfully trespassing. This charge arose from an inci-
dent on June 30 at 4:05 a.m. when Richard went over
“the fence onto Cassiar Mining Corporation property on
a dare. He was fined $75.00.

On June 25, 1986 RAULIE DUNCAN HOLMAN
was charged with 2 counts of possession of marijuana
after a search of his residence revealed hashish and mari-
juana valued at approximately $400. He pled guilty and
was fined $100 on each count.

On June 15, 1986 at 1:30 a.m. JAMES BARANYK
was the operator of a vehicle which was driven at speeds
up to 80 km an hour in a 35 km speed zone on Creerv

Street and Connell Drive. He pled guilty to impaired
driving and was finea $500 and his driving license was
suspended for six months.

JEFFERY QUOCK pled guilty to three counts of
assault. He was put on probation for eighteen months
and has to go for drug and alcohol counselling.

In Juvenile Court, a Cassiar youth pled guilty to
common mischief and to theft. The charge of mis-
chief arose when on April 18, 1986, the drapes in the
Community Centre were slashed. The theft charge
arose when $300 was taken from the bedroom of a
Cassiar resident. The money had been returned to the
owner. On the first charge, the youth was put on pro-
bation for six months, ordered to pay for new drapes,
and to contribute 30 unpaid hours of service to the
community. On the second charge, he was fined $100.

constructed. Bill notes that at that time the C.C.C. had
only one full-time employee, a janitor, and that all rec
facilities were operated by volunteers. He also mentions
that the only legal boot-legging establishment in B.C.
for several years was run by the company. ~

At that time a short trip into Watson Lake took 5
hours and involved hazards as varied as mudslides, water-
holes and glaciers. 4 Wheel drive was almost a necessity
and the Zemenchiks owned a Jeep. The two boys, aged
10 and 11, used to earn their holiday spending money by
winching people back on to the Alaska Highway.

Bill has enjoyed his stay in the north. These.are not
the best of times for Cassiar and Bill is concerned. “I
think we are in a difficult period due to financial and
market constraints. But it’s also an interesting period in
that we have the potential with McDame to increase the
life of this operation significantly for years to come. It’s
not going to be easy but | have a lot of faith in the com-
munity. 1 like this area and | look forward to this oper-
ation continuing, and being able to participate.”

Airport Upgrading (continued from page 1)

On installation this facility would provide space to
house an aviation briefing centre. The Atmospheric and
Environmental Service currently runs a synoptic station
only in Dease Lake, and pilots must phone Terrace or
Watson Lake for weather condition reports from other
areas. The new facility would allow for an on-site oper-
ator trained to provide these reports.

Trans Provincial Airlines is currently operating a
daily flight 5 days/week scheduled service to and from
Dease Lake.

1986 Fire Season

The Courier contacted the Ministry of Forests in
Dease Lake recently, to obtain statistics on the current
fire season. Sam Campese, the Resource Officer - Protec-
tion for the Cassiar forest district, advised us that the
number of fires put out this summer was 31, with a total
burn of 301 hectares. Although the number of fires is up
from the same period last year, when only 19 fires re-
quired the services of the Ministry in this area, the number
of hectares lost was considerably less. With something of
a drought situation last year, a total of 42,596 hectares
were burned, at a cost of $612,000. To date, $209,987
has been spent on the 1986 fire season.

Campese credits fast action of the initial attack crews
and much cooler weather with the decrease in the number
of hectares lost. The Cassiar forest district hired 10 initial
attack crewman, 3 patrolmen and 3 look-out personnel as
auxiliary staff for the current fire season. Lookouts in the
Cassiar district are located at Ace Mountain, Dodjatin, and

ter 355 “Range Act’’, notice is hereby given that all
horses, branded or unbranded, owned or claimed by
any person or persons, must be removed from Crown
Range within the Cassiar Forest District on or before
the 15th day of October, the year 1986, and must be
kept therefrom until the 1st day of June of the year
1987.

All horses which are authorized pursuant to
Section 3 of Chapter 355 ‘‘Range Act” are exempt
from this notice.

Any horses found running at large on the Crown
.Range during this period may be seized and sold or
‘otherwise disposed of without further notice to any
person as the undersigned may direct pursuant to
Section 45 of the said “‘Range Act’.

Following expiration of the above closure period [ff
no stock may be placed upon Crown Range without #f
