§ fig: Who’s News? OWEN -CORCORAN The new superintendent for School Dis- trict 87 arrived in Cassiar on October 1. Owen Corcoran has come from Prince George, where he was principal of the largest elementary school in the Prince George district. Prior to that he was co-ordinator of Professional Develop- ment for the District of Prince George, which has 1200 teachers. The localizing of the School Board for the Stikine District will have quite far-reaching effects on the schools in the area. At the present time, the schools in this district aré under the" direction of Mr. Gary Roth, who is the Superintendent for both the Stikine and Fort Nelson School Districts. The sec- retary-treasurer is Mike Chambers, who also works for both districts. He will continue in this position until a new secretary-treasurer has been appointed- hopefully by January 1, 1981. The problems in the Stikine District obviously differ from those in Fort Nelson. Dealing with them locally should insure a better response to the needs of the area. i Mr. Corcoran is primarily concerned with familiarizing himself with the district and having the people of the district become familiar with him. The District will, over a period of time, become an educational entity in itself, more in tune with the area and its pro- biems. % An official trustee from the Stikine District will be appointed within 60 days. The Parent Advisory Council will be consulted for recommendations, al- though the Minister of Education thas to appoint the trustee, which requires an order in council, By November 1981 Mr. Corcoran hopes to have an elected school board. Part of his job will be to work out the details regarding the composition of board re- presentation. The new offices for the School Board are located between the RCMP offices and the men's staff house. It will ev- entually employ seven people full time. ‘ Mr. Corcoran is married and has four children, all attending University at the present time, He is interested in eross country skiing and also squash. We hope his term in Cassiar country is enjoyable. 10 cents PLAZA DEVELOPMENT REMOVING WASTE ON TABLE MOUNTAIN LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR THE NEW MILL NEW CAIP UNDER CONSTRUCTION After a very successful summer of ex- ploration, drilling and mining, Plaza Mining Corp. are now in the process of building a mill complex two miles south of Quartz Creek on the Cassiar Road. The Company has just completed surface mining on the south side of Table Moun- tain and within the next few weeks will be building stock piles of ore ready to feed the mill, which should start up next spring - subject to Government approval. At the present time the contractors are pouring concrete for the foundation of the 100 ton per day mill. They plan to. install the mill machinery early in 1981 - also subject to Government ap- proval. Hopefully the mill will go into operation by May 1, 1981. While the: Mill is being built primarily for Plaza ore, provision is being made to take custom ore at a future date. Plaza Mining Corp. is a privately owned corporation but will be going public within the next two or three months. The Quartz Creek holding is their first in the area to be approaching produc— ‘tion. 2 The Company is carrying out an active drilling program, the results of which appear to be encouraging. They employ approximately 30 people, ten of whom are Plaza employees and the rest con- tractors for drilling, mining and mill construction. Plaza also has claims southwest of Watson Lake and in the Quesnel area but these are still in the prospecting stages. Although their in- terests in this area are mainly in gold they are also interested in any mineral holdings which would make vi- able operation. Consultants for the Plaza Mining Corp- oration are Trenaman, Spencer and As- sociates of Vancouver, They are also consultants for United Hearne Resources, who recently announced a production / decision. on their property - the Old Hanna Mine, Studies for regulatory ap- proval on this property are underway and they hope to go into production next year. Our thanks to Mr. R.Trenaman for the information and Mr. Ray Dumas for the tour of the property. s Sockey Awards for Local Boys During the summer Manley and Paul Guarducci attended Hockey School in Penticton for a week.
