Library on April 27 during school hours. Mr. Ryga will give a public reading at C.S.S. Library on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. George Ryga has become a prominent Canadian writer over the past 20 years. Mr. Ryga came to the theatre via poetry, the novel and radio and television dramas. Born in Deep Creek Alberta, Ryga was raised in a Ukrainian farm community in Northern Alberta. His formal education consisted of seven years in a one- room schoolhouse and a brief period at the University of Texas in 1949 after which he worked as a farm la- bourer, in construction and at a radio station in Edmon- ton Since 1962 he has made his living as a writer and now lives in Summerland, B.C. with his wife and family. His writings include plays, novels, short stories, poetry and film scripts. Mr. Ryga established himself as a writer with his success of, The Ecstacy of Rita Joe in the early 1970’s. In this play the heroine is unable to live by the old ways of her people or adapt to the white man’s ways in the city. The play depicts the plight of Indians as they struggle to come to terms with a society that provides cause for rebellion while remaining indifferent. Ryga’s works are often critical of society. Since its initial success, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe has received numerous professional and amateur productions. It Has been played in French and performed as a ballet and premiered in the U.S. in Washington’ D.C. His plays and novels, Hungry Hills and Ballad of a Stone-Picker explore problems of self-doubt, aliena- tion and personal unfulfilment. Ryga’s dramatic tech- nique often blends realism, poetry, dance and song and juxtaposes past and present. Publications include Hungry Hills (1963), The Ecstasy of Rita Joe (1967), Ploughmen of the Glacier, Captives of a Faceless Drummer (1971), Night Desk (1976),. Ballad of a Stone-Picker (1977), Sunrise on Sarah, Beyond the Crimson Morning (1979), Two Plays: Pracelsus & Prometheus Bound (1982).
