of two years imprisonment upon the
defendant. While the sentence may
seem light, the court had through the
verdict only obtained from the jury
a finding of negligence in a hunting
accident, and so the sentence was
fitted to the finding.

It is of interest to know that up-
wards of 7,000 miles were covered in
air travel on this case by one police
officer. The police organizations of
British Columbia, Kimball County,
the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
and the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police all took part in this unusual
case. McComas’ death occurred on
August 9, 1948. By October 8,
1948, the defendant had already be-
gun his sentence for the offence, just
two months later.

defendant had sought to hide from
the consequences of his act, but fate
had overtaken him by the ‘‘little
things’’ with which we started this
article. The foolish ‘phone call from
Laramie, Wyoming, to his estranged
wife, stopping at a cafe where a dis-
gruntled former owner was prepared
to make trouble for any subsequent

purchaser, and last, but not least, the
boastful sending of newspaper clip-
pings about the Bushnell incident to
his wife in Dayton. But for these
“little things’’ would the body of
John McComas.have been found to
this day? Who knows, the ways of
Providence are strange but passing
wise.
