difference, and finally Deacon shot him. He
would no doubt have done for both of us
if we had not done so, as his strength did
not appear to lessen and we were getting
exhausted.

I could keep going for a week with
stories of the things that have happened
during my years in the provincial police
service.

There are three lone, unmarked graves
between Quesnel and Barkerville; I mean
other than a few that are in private burial
grounds. These all date from long before
I came to the country, but I heard all about
them from the old-timers and have seen
them, and in Blessing’s case I got all the
facts from people acquainted with them
and from the old files of the Cariboo Sen-
tinel. The first was that of a man whose
name had not been preserved, who died
suddenly sometime in 1864 about four miles
south of Van Winkle on the old road to
Barkerville, somewhere about Houseman
Creek. The next was a coloured man,
named Blessing, shot and killed at Pine
Grove Creek by a travelling companion the
last day of May or the first day of June,
1866. The third was a Chinese cook at
13-Mile House, who was killed by Alec
Wallace, the proprietor, in self-defence
when the Chink made a run at him with
a hatchet.

- Charles Morgan Blessing was killed by a
man named James Barry, with whom he was
travelling on foot from Quesnel to Barker-
ville and whose acquaintance he had made
in Quesnel a night or two before. Blessing
had walked up from Yale with another
coloured man named Wellington D. Moses,
a Barkerville barber, whom I heard of when
I was living in Victoria. The murder took
place a few miles east of Beaver Pass House
and about 25 miles east of Barkerville. Late
in the following September Blessing’s body
was found in the bushes a little way off the
road, and personal effects found with it
established his identity. When Moses heard
of it he immediately went to Judge Cox
and laid an information against Barry, who
had been living in Barkerville, and who
seems to have got out in a hurry as soon
as he heard of the finding of the body. A
constable was sent after him to Soda Creek
but he had taken passage for the south on
the stage. He wired a description ahead to
Yale and when he got there found that
Barry had been caught as he stepped off the
stage.

Barry was brought back to Barkerville
and committed for trial by Judge Cox. He
was tried before Chief Justice Begbie and
a jury at Richfield at the summer assizes
of 1867. As several persons had seen the
two men together on the road there was a
very strong case against Barry, but a curious
circumstance cinched it. When Barry
reached Barkerville he spent most of his
time with the “hurdies”’1® and was lavish
with money. In the interval between com-
mitment and trial, Moses happened to notice
on the finger of one of the girls a peculiar
ring that he had seen on Blessing’s hand,
and when she was questioned about it she

stated that Barry had given it to her. Barry
was hanged at Richfield in July, 1867, the
first and only white man ever hanged in the
Cariboo District. All other executions which
have taken place there were of Indians.
