page 4 over tne kage Nov 22,195 Opinion Pieces by Ian Lorenz Unlike many of the other students at UNBC who shade the decision to attend UNBC either based on the fact that no other school would take them or that we offered a program that couldn’t be taken anywhere else, I came to UNBC because I love the north. I could have attended any of the Universities in British Columbia but I chose UNBC because I felt the University of NORTHERN British Columbia would be a university for the people of the north and have distinct northern features. Well, I have some sad news for whom ever was under the misconception that this university was built for Northerners. The north is not composed entirely of women and people of first nations. Nor is it composed exclusively of truck driving loggers and resource planners. Since this is true why does the University constantly funnel all of its money and resources into feminist, native, and resource based causes. These are important issues and should be addressed but not to the detriment of all else. Being neither a feminist or a native, this University often leaves me feeling left out. This University that was supposedly built for people like me, the people _ of the north. This was built for the people of the north why is it that about 70% of the students here are from the lower mainland. And I seriously doubt that more than two or three Profs have ever been farther north than Prince George. I realize that I am just whining and complaining and right now many of you wish I would just shut up but I have a reason for saying all this. I could handle it when the women’s centre got a pile of money while other groups were shut out. And I can handle the fact that we have a whole First Nations wing. I can even handle all the lesbian, feminist propaganda I have read for many of my courses. But what really pisses me off is that this University that claims to be a representative of the north has cut of all funding , sponsor, and avant garde fashions Dear Students, Avant Garde Fachione is coming to UNECE Movember 27 and 28 th. bt students will receive a 20% discount on all regular priced Merchandise. The decision was made not only to yank all support from the hockey team, but the team was also expressly forbidden to wear the UNBC logo. Nevermind that every player had to put up $300 dollars of their own money plus buy their own equipment. This was a very sad and pathetic move by the administration. Where does all that money that I pay for student fees, activity fees, etc. . . . go? The university has not put on one function that matters one bit to me. The only worth while things that come out of this University are activities put on by dedicated students who get no support or encouragement from the administration. And what was the Universities reason for yanking its merger support from the hockey team. Apparently some loser in administration (most likely someone who will see snow for the first time this winter) has Michael Law Why does this university seem to be predominantly man- hating? I’m referring to the little advertising display that’s in front of the registrar’s office, labeled “Stereotypes in Advertising”, which was put up by Psychology 402. This struck a very raw nerve with me because IJ didn’t like the way they were arguing their point. Seeing this display was a massive smack in the face for me. I’d prefer to say that I’m an equal opportunity guy, treating everyone on equal terms. I didn’t feel too good after seeing these ads. I can find several things wrong with the way they argue their point, which would weaken their argument. First of all, they were extremely selective in choosing their examples to study. Over 80% of their advertising shows women. This is not a true reflection of the advertising industry. Although many of the advertisements do feature women that aren’t wearing a heck of a whole lot, this only serves to exaggerate those f, numbers and blow the truth out of proportion. They are also incorrect in the purpose of several ads. The advertisement for wool products “Stereo From the Poison Pen.... decided our hockey team is too violent. That’s right, a hockey team that is too violent. Enough said. If this NORTHERN university won’t even support it’s OWN hockey team how can they expect me to support them. When my friends or siblings ask me my thoughts on UNBC I may not have anything good to say. Hockey is only one way this University has shown me it cares little for the north and even less for its students that are not wrapped up~—in the most fashionable cause of the month. Every University in B.C. (except UNBC) has a building on campus that students may smoke in, even though all of these Universities are located in climates that would allow outdoor smoking year round. UNBC has no such building . Instead this University forces its students to feed their addiction in temperatures below thirty degrees. Yes, I know that smoking is a disgusting habit but I believe there are enough smokers in attendance types in Advertising” to show a clear need for such a facility. Forcing us to smoke in temperatures that will freeze exposed skin in thirty seconds is a little harsh. I strongly urge all readers to write to the University president (you can drop letters off at the administration building) and tell him that a University that doesn’t support its hockey team is not a University you will be returning to: in the fall. I also urge you to tell him that no matter how bad smoking outside in weather you wouldn’t send your dog out in. Everyone pays students fees. It is not just money collected from feminists, first nations people, jocks, study freaks, and political: zealots. It is also money collected from smokers, drinkers, lazy slobs,' hockey fans, and revolutionaries. © Let’s have a little something for' everyone not just something for the righteous, self serving, southern control freaks running this place. And if I offended anyone with this article please allow me to say ... GOOD! | t shows a man sitting on a barstool, where the barstools look like legs in high heels. They seemed to have completely missed the point. The point of the advertisement was to show that looks can be deceiving. The way he sits in the barstool looks like that those are his legs, shaven and in high-heels, This is intended for satirical purposes. When they describe the woman “doing pet tricks”, this was also incorrect, as many bartenders do a lot of wacky things in the bar, regardless of gender. The section labeled “What’s Wrong With this Picture”, in which men’s. heads are superimposed onto advertisements featuring women, also struck a raw nerve. There are ads that have men doing laundry, men washing dishes, and men cleaning house. One that comes to mind is the advertisement for the Black and Decker wallpaper remover, where a couple are having a contest to see who can remove the wallpaper on their side of the room first. The woman is using the Black and Decker wallpaper remover, while the man _ stubbornly (a stereotypical trait, it seems) uses “his way”, using conventional methods. In a matter of minutes, the woman completely strips her side of the room of wallpaper, while the man is barely: done one quarter of his wall. She smirks while he’s still standing there, scraping away. They also seem to have missed’ one major point about the advertising that features scantly. clad women. MOST OF THEM. ARE NOT AIMED FOR GUYS!, How often do you see a guy: reading through Vogue magazine, seeing a picture of a scantly clad women, thinking, “Hmm, maybe I should buy that bottle of cellulite cream.”’?? Indeed, there are problems with the advertising industry, but they are changing. YES, THINGS HAVE CHANGED. “You mean a woman can open it” is one example. I know very well that women are much stronger than we (the male species) give them credit for. I took a hockey stick to the face from a girl because she missed the puck, so I know this all toc well. Unfortunately, they have been so selective in their choices, their point is completely lost in the process, It would probably better if they renamed their project “How women are stereotyped in the advertising industry”, being that that seemed to be the focus of their project. If they did that, the project probably wouldn’t change that
