: Sports March 12, 2001 Wolfpack Hockey Rav Submitted By: Scott Shaw- MacLaren The Junior Varsity Men’s Hockey team saw hard hitting hockey. action at UCC (University College of the Cariboo) over the winter break. Saturday’s game saw UNBC jump to a quick lead. Team captain Craig Metcalf scored 6 minutes into the first on a fast break fed by center- man Kevin Laskowski from Luke Donnely. The dogfight was fast and furious through- out the first period, with the Sun Demon’s refusing to fall to the hungry Wolves. A late goal by Ryan Vanderman from Mike Thompson kept UCC alive at the break. UNBC started the second full of energy, attacking the 5 weary UCC defense repeat- edly. This forced turnovers, which Dean Dickenson of the Woives capitalized on with an early goal from hard working Leon Clarmont. This pres- sure caved the UCC moral leading to an addition of goals in the second period. After a turnover forced by Kirby Jaques, Eric Kozijn added the third goal, assisted by blue liners Rob Wakelin and Luke Donnely. Future prospect, Kurtis Jaques, from the Quesnel Thunder, added to the onslaught on a quick break initiated by Rob Wakelin and winger Scott Shaw-MacLaren. This closed the second period with the Wolf pack dominating UCC, 4-1. The third period saw UCC attempt to get back in the game, but outstanding play between the pipes by fresh- man goaltender Derek Lebeouf, held off the Sun Demon’s _ efforts. Craig Metcalf chalked up his sec- ond of the game in the dying seconds of the third on a turnover forced by forward, Aaron Michalchuck to kill UCC’s hopes of a comeback. Final score: UNBC- 5 UCC- 1. Sunday saw a 6am start for the Wolfpack to continue the trip to 100-Mile House. Here the road weary Wolves faced off against the senior “AA” Bears, dominators of the BC Senior Men’s league. A slow start by the Wolves allowed the Bears to jump out to and early two-goal lead. Craig Metcalf would not allow 100 Mile to dominate, striking back with a goal late in the first with helpers from Michalchuck and Laskowski. The more experienced Bears peppered tender Derek Lebeouf throughout the sec- ond period, adding three more to the scoreboard. The tired Wolfpack gave a final burst of effort in a physical and penalty-filled third period, outshooting the Bears con- siderably. After killing multi- ple Bear powerplays, UNBC struck back with a brilliant five-hole ringer by Aaron Michalchuck, with help from Laskowski and Metcalf. The Bears added the final goal, late in the third bringing the final score to 6-2 for the Bears. A Reduction in Tuition Fees age UCC Sun Demons The successful road trip saw UNBC break the intercolle- giate ice, with the 5-1 win over UCC. This paves the way for the inaugural season next year of the BCAHA Collegiate Hockey League, where UNBC hopes to dominate against the likes of the University of Victoria, Malaspina College, Okanagan University College, and other BC College teams. Show you support of the Wolf pack in this year’s PGRHL++++++ playoffs, and look forward to college hockey action next season. All UNBC game times are posted at the fitness center. On February 28 the provincial government announced that tuition fees have been reduced by 5%, core funding has increased and 5,000 new spaces have been added for 2001-2002. Thank-you to all those students who, over the past decade, attended the rallies, signed the petitions and wrote their Members of the Legislative Assembly. It was your efforts that helped shift public opinion in favour of lower tuition fees, making possible the provincial government's decision. However, We need to keep up the pressure. We need to make sure that all candidates in the upcoming provincial election are fully committed to maintaining the fee reduction and increasing access to post-secondary education.
