anchors for their canoes. This caused them great grief. Presently they planned to make a new home on a certain inlet, when a large Halibut came up out of the water, opened its mouth and swallowed the canoe containing two princesses and one prince. This happened more than once, but finally the survivors killed the monster. Among these was a young prince who went into the surrounding woods to mourn his many heart-breaking losses. Presently he came to a lake, where, hearing a noise, he saw on the water a large Beaver with copper eyes, copper ears, copper teeth and copper claws. After many days his people succeeded in capturing and killing this rare Beaver, which they at once decided should be their Crest; from his eyes, ears, teeth and claws they made a new "copper" in the form of a chief's headdress to be worn on his head at pot- latches. This is held in place by four headmen, one of each clan, so that the people may know that this chief alone is head chief of all the Tsimsyans. ~_308—
