IT HAPPENED IN 71 This year, 1971 makes one hund- red years since ‘the Province of British Columbia joined in the con- federation with other Provinces of Canada. To celebrate the Centenn- ial year, the Government of B.C. formed a Centennial '71 committee in the province's capital, Victoria. This committee provided guid- ance and help in forming province wide celebrations in many ways. They encouraged and guided in form ing local area committees, not only for the purpose of organizing fun- ctions of enjoyment for the areas involved, but also for raising funds to assist in obtaining something useful and lasting which would be a permanent commemorative of the centennial year. In Cassiar a local committee was formed through a public vote to represent this area. The com- mittee consisted of five members and the centennial project selected by the communi ty.was, the completion of a large lounge in the existing Cassiar Centennial Arena for the use of the residents as an area for social and other activities. The government provided a smal] grant to cover initial expenses and to set the centennial celebrations rolling. Thanks to the efforts of the committee and others of the community we were able to start off with a terrific bang on the evening of Friday, March 12th, NO . through town. CASSIAR’'S CENTENNIAL WINTER CARNIVAL Cassiar's Centennial Winter Carnival covered a period of three days and involved nearly all, if not all, local organizations and clubs as well as active persons in the town. Everyone was encouraged to do their thing and make it an enjoyable weekend, This they did with great zest. These pictures of this car- nival represent only a minor part of the functions of enjoyment dur- ing those days. To start off the celebrations there was the torch light parade The parade was led by Cubs, Brownies and Scouts march- ing to the pipes and drums made up by boys and girls from the school band. The sound of the fire truck also helped: in calling residents to follow the flaming torches to the huge bonfire. Here, the Guides and Brownies had hot-dogs waiting and plenty of hot chocolate. Community singing also helped to warm it up.
