12 February 23, 2011 + Over the Edge The Best of 2010 The best albums of the year that you need to have on your ipod DARCIE SMITH ARTS EDITOR It took almost two months to decide on the finalists, and after all that, they still are not in any particular order. Each album on this list is unique and worthy of a definite salute. The Black Keys — Brothers: Released on Nonesuch. Seeing this album on this list shouldn’t come as a shock to many. Brothers is filled with incredible garage-y blues rock that instantly satisfies with the first track “Everlasting Light” — which could also be one of the top songs of the last five years. Riyl: Dan Auerbach, the White Stripes Grinderman — Grinderman2: The illustrious Nick Cave is back with some good old-fashioned dirty rock and roll. Cave is incredible at perfecting a sound that is so filthy, yet so polished. Each track is classy and raw. Riyl: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Gutter Twins Shad — TSOL: Canadian rapper Shad certainly made some waves across the country over the past year. His trademark humour fights back against stereotypes and provides some outstanding hip-hop. If you get a chance to see him live, take it. Not only can he play guitar, but he can freestyle with the ONLINE SOURCE Shad even came to play at show in PG this January. How cool is that? best of them. Riyl: K’naan, Common Delorean — Subiza: Haling from Barcelona, Delorean is an indie-pop-electronic-dance band. The first two tracks are so catchy and infectious that you can forgive the rest of the album for needing some time to grow. “Stay Close and “Real Love” are probably two of the best songs of the year. Riyl: Hot Chip, New Order Band of Horses — Infinite Arms: This album starts off with a slow track, but Ben Bridwell’s voice is so beautiful and clear that this stray from a conventional track listing is a treat — especially when followed by the poppy “Compliments.” Riyl: The National, My Morning Jacket The Roots — How | Got Over: The Roots have always been one of the greatest rap groups of all time, and with the release of this album, they have only further confirmed that. Definitely the darkest album they’ve released, but at the same time their message is as always, profound. Riyl: A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One Eels — End Times: Lovers of Mark Oliver Everett would agree that this is another heart-warming and heart-breaking album from the man behind the band. Described as low-fi, this album sounds much like several other Eels albums, but for Eels, that’s a good thing. There is something comforting about Everett's vocals, and if he was singing about anything other than his troubles, most fans might raise an eyebrow. Riyl: The Rentals, Lou Barlow, Neil Young Broken Social Scene — Forgiveness Rock Record: This album is the kind of music that BSS was born to make. The album is incredibly smooth and polished, and at times, even sexy. Yes, sexy. Despite the usual various appearances from other Canadian indie rock stars, the album remains quite cohesive. Riyl: Stars, The Decemberists, Feist CocoRosie — Grey Oceans: If you love a quirky voice and beautiful piano, this album is for you. The sisterly indie- folk duo returns with another unique set of songs that demonstrate their eclectic talent and knack for bizarre song writing - A must-hear for the adventurous thinker. Riyl: Joanna Newsom, Bjork, Portishead Beach House — Teen Dream: Not enough can be said about this spectacular dark and alluring dream-pop album. This release really showcases just what Beach House is all about. The songs are instantly catchy and there isn’t one track that you’d be inclined to skip past. From the first track, you’re instantly picked up and carried away in the music, and completely lost until it comes to its conclusion - Definitely an album for the dreamer. Riyl: Mazzy Star, Nico, Mojave 3 ONLINE SOURCE ‘The Black Keys UBC DAP The gateway to accounting Accelerate your future with the Diploma in Accounting Program (DAP) at the University of British Columbia.
