SCOUTS CANADA 1-888-SCOUTS-NOW www.scouts.ca ver Th Backyard BBQ Removes YOUR SOCKS! By Kathleen De Vere With the eighth annual Back Yard BBQ just a few days away, energy and excitement are thick in the air, thick as... things full of other things... cottage cheese... first year students... um yeah. The important thing is that NUGSS had brought in three great Canadian bands this year, and local favourites Floored will be playing at the Multiplex to rock you, the students, until your collective socks are removed, in a non-invasive, sexually un- stimulating manner. | repeat: no members of NUGSS will ' erotically remove your socks, unless you ask them very, very nicely. (And maybe buy them a drink.) So, if you aren’t already frothing at the mouth in gleeful anticipation of pure rock fury, Over The Edge has put togeth- er a primer which will inform you, with explicit detail, all about the bands you'll be hearing September 13th dur- ing the Backyard BBQ. WIDE MOUTH MASON . Wide Mouth Mason is . Shaun Verreault on guitar and vocal, Earl Pereira on bass and backing vocals and Safwan Javed on drums. All childhood friends, Wide Mouth Mason formed in 1995 and got their first big break when they played a show in Saskatoon put on by a local radio station. They were noticed by other Canadian favourites, Big Sugar who invited them to play on their Canada wide tour in 1996. Soon after the tour, Wide Mouth Mason was picked up by Warner Music Canada to record their first album, and in 1997 they released their self titled debut. Since their debut, Wide Mouth Mason have only been getting bigger and better, and on August 27th they released their 4th album Rained out Parade. Wide Mouth Mason’s music could be described with a handy interpretative dance, but due to the limitations of print, I'll use words instead. , Their sound is an original blend of blues and catchy pop melodies, using vocal har- monies from all three mem- bers to bring depth and funk to their songs. Defiantly a band you can shake your booty to. HOLLY MCNARLAND Based out of Vancouver, Holly McNarland got her start when she released her first album Stuff, on Universal music. Her career automatical- ly took off because of her blend of rockin” tough grrl anthems and deeply emotion- al lyrics. To follow up Holly released E/mo two years later, then took a break from her career to mature and raise a child. For her latest album, Home is where your feet are, Holly worked with several different producers to get the feel and theme she wanted to express. Holly’s new music is more mature, with songs ranging from her previous rock efforts to sexy, crooning ballads. As one of Canada’s most popular female artists, Holly McNarland is going to kick your ass and entrance you with her unique and engaging music. LIVE ON RELEASE Live on Release is an all girl band, all under the age of 19. Members Brittin, Letty, Foxx and Leah were all skilled and experienced musicians when they formed through an ad placed in the Georgia Straight by Brittin and Letty. Live On Release got their big start when Riley Karroll, Britten’s sister and the band’s manager convinced Bif Naked to check out the girls at a live show in New Westminister. Bif was immediately impressed with their live act and their song- writing talent, and soon after the girls were signed to Bif’s own label, Her Royal Majesty’s Records. Live on Release’s debut album Seeing Red was released in April 2001 and since then, Live on Release has been alternating touring with high school. Live on Release’s sound is best when it’s live. With shows full of energy and a rockin” good time, Live on Release may just cause you to remove your socks in a somewhat erotic manner, as you may remember that not all teenagers are dumb enough to like Brittany Spears. So, there you have it, a pre- view of all the artists you’re that are going to remove your socks. You better be there! ie e Edge Page 2
